Christmas seems far to over rated to me. All the hype...from months till now and over in a day what's the point!

I know its more for the children people say, but most kids are spoiled brats.

Here's what it should be about.. a time to reflect and being with your family or someone who needs something more than you do.

A small example, the other day the wife ran into the store and I waited in the truck and I was approached by a woman who said she need money to eat, all I had was two dollars on me, I opened my wallet and handed it to her. She said Merry Christmas. To me that made me feel better than the actual day.

Giving is just not holidays or birthdays it's just the thought of giving anytime.

It's a commercial nightmare (and I'm not religious) - so we love it for most of the reasons you mention one should. I loathe those brats you speak of and most kids get WAY too much without a thought of why, etc. Parents need to get real, give the kids less material junk and more time.

I wonder how many people recycvled the wrapping paper, or considered the fact that Christmas is now almost entirely made in China - a nation that still increasingly depletes endangered species just for supposed 'medicinal' purposes? Scary.

We've had a great time though - notwithstanding the lemmings.

I heard a Christian author on an NPR essay a while back. He said he had given up on Christmas and figured instead of fighting it, just to give in. Call it Consumerism Day if you want. All he wanted was for people to leave Easter alone, which we have luckily...

Here's to next Easter.

For me, Christmas is almost like a journey. When I'm going on a great trip I anticipate, plan, share ideas, and so on...and that's a major part of the appreciation. The "Day" is wonderful, but it's more than that. It's beyond presents, gifts, decorated trees or even having someone to share the day with. I could do Christmas without all of those...but it would not be Christmas without having that time of reflection, and a heart of gratitude.

The roughest time I've ever had at Christmas was right after losing my mom, my husband was out of work, and we had just reconciled after an almost 2 years separation. My sister bought my tree for me, and a couple of other family members bought presents for us to wrap for my daughter. It was a very memorable and warm Christmas.

However...We've also had a Christmas where I received some unexpected money just before the holiday, and it was lavished on gifts beyond the usual amount that year. It was also a memorable and warm Christmas - just as meaningful. It's all about where the priority is.

My total Christmas budget for everything (including special cookings, wrapping, sending cards, etc.) is usually around $600. That is for my hubby, my two daughters, my in-laws and neices and nephews. It's fun buying meaningful gifts that don't break the budget....but the year I could really splurge was a blast! We don't do credit cards.

Just my .02, but I think it's all about what's in the heart and the motives behind the celebrating and gift giving.

Out food shopping the other day, my wife tried to pick up some crumpets or croissants for breakfast on Christmas morning. She couldn't get either of these, but there were enough hot cross buns in the shop to sink a battleship. Roll on Easter!
