The photo I really wanted to shoot this week but wasn't able to was a close up of a snail on a concrete slab, with diffuse morning light so the trail of mucus looks all shiny and blue behind it. The main goal was to goof on Stopped Motion because snails move so slowly, yet they *are* moving. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be snail season at my house. :)

I'm just curious how people would have reacted something like that (assuming it were shot really well)... would I have gotten torn to bits or would people have realized I was being silly on purpose? Would you all have recommended it for disqualification? I really want to know!

Totally would have agreed with it.. as it *is* stop motion. And hey, if it was a good shot... but logically thinking.. as long as its not a still life, landscape or a person posing completely still for you.. it is stop motion.. therefore couldn't allmost anything be justified? That is the whole idea of photography, stopping time and freezing it forever in picture...

Interesting question... I made a few comments on some photos in this challenge that would have applied to your idea as well. MY preference for a stopped motion photo is capturing something that is moving at a little faster pace than a snail. There were two photographs in this challenge that were excellent shots. If they had been part of a different challenge, I would have scored them much higher. I used the analogy of photographing a Ferrari riding on a flat bed rail car. It is moving, of course, but not quite fitting *my* interpretation of the challenge.

Please don't get me wrong here. I *would not* recommend for disqualification. I would score it with my new system but it would not score well on meeting the challenge. It may score well in other areas however...

My system doesn't allow for a score much higher than a 6 if I don't feel the challenge has been met.

What you really should have done is poured water on that snail. Some of the folks in the forums here are really excited about all the water shots ;)

For your transitions challenge, you could pour salt on that snail. I'd give you creativity credit for that :))

I'd have scored it high for creatively meeting the challenge and also having an element of humour.

Of course if it was a well taken photo it would score well and if it was just a snapshot of a snail, it would have done badly.

Least, those are the two things I vote on, idea and execution

Hmm. If you executed the snail I don't know how I'd vote...

an interesting question. i've sort of been applying the following criteria to my rating, since it's the same crit i applied in my own shot choice selection. and that is, it had to be a little bit obvious that something was being 'stopped'. in other words if there is nothing that indicates that the pic wouldnt look any different if the item wasn't moving, i.e. park your SUV in the middle of the street, and shoot it, then title it 'SUV at 75 mph STOPPED MOTION!' there's no way to tell it was actually moving. And I think therein lies the crux of the 'challenge'. It's not very challenging from the stopmotion perspective to shoot something that's moving very slowly or still. so i give kudos to anyone that did stop something mid-air or whatnot : )..
