Haha...just got done reading that at their website. Looks pretty sweet.

Nice! Although I'm not sure I'm going to shell out 500 dollars when I already have PS and PS Creative Suite. I hope some people will post their thoughts about this software if they get a chance to try it out.

Look at those recommended system requirements though. Whew! Working in RAW throughout the workflow sounds great though.

WOW!! Those are some hefty system requirements, I'll have to upgrade my G4.

Wow.. Kind of ironic really. The program is called "aperture", and the intro page shows a lens with an impossible looking aperture. 50/1.4, my ass.. Hell.. Looks like a zoom even.

Oh drool. From the sample screenshots, this could revolutionize the digital darkroom. I especially like the "light table" and loupe. RAW file management is one of my biggest obstacles right now.

Anyone have any idea as to why the video won't play for me? I only hear the audio and it's completely white where the video should be. I get an error massage stating that I am missing some software to play the video but the audio keeps playing. I updated Quicktime to the latest version and still nothing. Any ideas?

Yeah.. The second Microsoft cuts support from 2k, i'm moving too.

So...I haven't yet invested in the "big boy" version of photoshop. I'll hold off just a tad longer to see if this is a suitable replacement for editing. As far as organizing and putting together photo stories it looks like this software is super-intuitive with the table and loupe and everything...

I'm going to a conference next Friday where I should be able to give this a test drive...

Well, then you're late!! MS finished mainstream support for Win2k in June.

//support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=3071

Unless you count extended business support, which goes until 2010, at which time, you'll be able to grab one of the new 8-processor Intel 12.4GHz Macs running OS 12.5. ;-) I'm already jealous.

Aperture looks impressive. I'm hoping that some of the mainstream photography sites can get their hands on copies for hands-on reviews, especially comparing Aperture to the workflow of things like PS CS and Capture One Pro (my current RAW tool).

Screen res will be a big deal for this, based on the looks of the interface, it's very heavy with menus and toolbars, like all Apple Pro apps. not really designed for my laptop screen!

IMHO....

BAD APPLE!!!!

STUPID!!!!

This is probably the worst move I've seen Steve Jobs do in ages. Adobe's Photoshop is Apple's premier software package. This is nearly a slap in the face to Adobe. I can't see why Adobe won't simply return the favor by releasing Adobe Photoshop CS3 for Windows (oh what no Mac version...sawry).

Apple would have been much wiser to have released an "office application suite" then release a redundant software that competes directly with one of the their strongest supporting 3rd party applications.

Yes...folks...pick up shotgun, point at foot....now pull trigger!

Take a closer look, and I think you'll find that this doesn't even begin to encroach on Photoshop's turf. It replaces tools like Capture One or RawShooter, not Photoshop.

Good for Apple, recognizing a growing market of RAW shooters, and coming to market with a leading product out of the gate. If anything, this will draw more serious photographers into a true RAW workflow, and perhaps even sell more copies of Photoshop because of it.

Finally, I'd be willing to bet that none of the executives at Adobe were surprised by this. I expect Apple made very sure they weren't burning any bridges before doing serious development in this space.

Actually, at the $500 mentioned price...it's right in Photoshop's competition zone coming in just a couple hundred dollars cheaper. Nah...I'd say it's fairly direct competition!

What wkoffel said. Aperture is only for processing and organizing RAW files. It's essentially a souped-up RAW counterpart to iPhoto. You still need Photoshop for the serious editing– filters, masks, composites, channel operations, etc. I hope they bring some of these features into iPhoto 6!

Then it seems a tad over-priced at $500...
10/19/2005 05:56:19 PM · #22
Not for the professional photographers it's aimed at.

The gimmicks are great but CS2's Bridge and RAW support really suffices for many I bet. I reckon they could have dropped the price and caught more 'power users'. It's no direct competitor to Photoshop on its own by the look of things though.

Did you even read about what that piece of software does? Capture One, Rawshooter and a dozen other RAW processors are just complements of Photoshop...to improve RAW workflow not replace Photoshop. Capture One Pro costs exactly US$499 and is NOT meant to replace Photoshop, Aperture is aimed at software like Capture One or even the lesser Nikon Capture and Canon DPP...

I'd debate that. Many photogs consider Capture1 overpriced, and this seems even worse. There are very good tools out there for reasonable prices, I find it odd that Apple thinks they can succeed in the marketplace with a Mac-only application priced in the stratosphere. In order to gain any ground at all, it would have to simply blow all other RAW converters away in functionality, speed, and image quality. I'm sure it will be very good, Apple doesn't do things halfway, but I doubt it will win market share at that price.
