So I realize it has been out maybe 1-2 days, but does anyone have it yet? Any initial thoughts? I am trying to find one in my area to see it before I buy, but no luck yet.

I believe Best Buy is carrying them in their stores and Dell.com just posted them as for sale today. Getting the two lens kit?

Thinking about it and the two lense kit very much! I'm going to BB Friday to see if they have one and how it feels and either get it or try something else.

I have ordered it with the two lens kit. I should get it in the next few days. It is not yet listed in the DPC cameras, however. How do we get it added? I could not follow the instructions in the FAQs...

Where did you order it from? Good deal?

I already have a kit lens, so I have to wait until someone sells the body alone. Adorama had the kit in stock last Friday, but due to holidays they are closed this week.

A seller in Italy, found on eBay. Price seemed reasonably good for the European market.

I believe Dell.com is selling the body-only, as well as, the lens kits.

I check it out. Thats were I got my E-300 w/ lens.

Does anyone know if it has the mirror up function like the E-300 (with firmware 1.3)? Thats really what sold me on the olympus other than the 50-200. Someting my D70 sorely lacks.

Just checked Dell and they have the body only, but it won't ship for 1-2 weeks. B&H will be open the 27th and they are $20 cheaper.

I can't imagine why the E-500 wouldn't have mirror lock-up, since this was an added feature through a firmware upgrade with the E-300 but the E-500 lacks a verticle portrait hand grip and a port for connecting a shutter cable for bulb mode. I'm wondering if the RM-1 remote will allow for use of bulb mode.

Just confirmed with Olympus tech support that the E-500 does have mirror lock-up. However, in order to use the bulb mode you have to continuously hold down the shutter button as their is no connection on camera for a bulb cable and the RM-1 remote will cease to function after 30 seconds.

From what I've read so far, it sounded to me like it only has a bulb mode with the remote. But its hard to say... I've read so much about this camera and I'm due for something new...

ok...question from the "Dslr dummie" what is a mirror lock up?

I am really interested in getting the E-500 but i wont be able to plunk my money down until about tax return time( if all goes right santa might bring me one this year....i been a real good girl this year)I have done alot of comparing and research and It looks to best suit my personal photography needs. Just wish i had a camera dealer close where i could hold that baby in my hands to see if we were made for eachother first!

Mirror lock-up allows you to lock the mirror up in open position before the shutter is open so that the vibrations that are produced by the mirror moving out of the light path when the shutter button is pressed is allowed to dissipate. Without MLU, the vibrations produced could negatively impact the quality and sharpness of the image. This typically happens with longer shutter speeds, such as between 1/30th and 1 second. It would be important to use with macro subjects, long telephoto lenses and longer shutter speeds.

If you wait until tax time to purchase the E-500 you can be sure that the price will come down a great deal by then. It may be worth the wait.
Hope this helped.

It would appear that I am not the only one really excited about this camera. The two lens/body kit seems like q good deal. Maybe I will call my local best buy and find out if they have it.

Also another great thing about the mirror up feature of the olympus besides vibration reduction is that the feature makes a great timer also. I hate having to reset the timer after every exposure on my Nikons (and I think e-300 also), but the mirror up has to be defeated via menu.

Finally dpreview.com finally posted the E-500 review. See it HERE.
10/21/2005 08:58:38 PM · #21
It got a "highly recommended" from DPReview.
Better yet is the price that Dell.com is currently selling it at: $693 for the one lens kit and when you use a coupon code it brings it down even further to a grand whooping $633!

Andre, I have just finished collecting almost all of the associated gear for the E-20 which I absolutely love. It takes great pictures, but has a big downside for me, which is a lack of ease in portability. As you know, the E-10/E-20 are very heavy cameras, and especially with the added teleconverters, verticle portrait grip and batteries, etc carrying all that, and a tripod!, makes for difficult bicycle riding, which is the only way I get around these days (I have no car). I can honestly say that I feel, and look like a pack mule when carrying it all.

So you are right, I am going spring for either the E-300 (which I saw today and fell in love with the minute I handled it), or the E-500 (which I have not yet seen). They are both very portable along with the two lens kit that take you from 28mm to 300mm focal lengths. At this point I'm just waiting to handle the 500 and then see which one leaves more wallet resources for later purchases of equipment.

I'm very excited about this upcoming acquisition, and so is my back :).
Thanks for your thoughts and nice to hear from you.

Btw...what about yourself, you could use some new gear as well?

Olyuzi...... The E-500 is currently champ for the lightest weight dslr, which may be a consideration for bike transportation, but the improvements over the E-300 (at least according the DPReview) should tip the scale, at least their comparisons show they are right. Regardless of size and weight, slr outfits are going to be bulky with the addition of extra equip and lenses. I have not touched a E-500 either - I know I am going to find it a winner. As you are well aware, Oly build quality and ergonomics are unmatched. Noise above iso 400 is unfortunately for the time being still be a factor when buying an Olympus. First time slr buyers should absolutely look at this camera and also conon/nikon users wanting a 2nd system.

I think i have just about set my heart on this one.now to make myself wait:o\ ~~Cher~~
