I am the last person to answer a complicated question about off-camera flashes, but I did go out and pick one up for my little cam to give me a little bit more control over how I am learning about lighting.

I came across a couple of slave flash shoes that had thyristors and flash sensors on them. I think they weren't too expensive. Unfortunately, they aren't widely available anymore. I ended up buying a dedicated slave flash unit. It doesn't have a lot of settings on it that I can change, but I can adjust a few things on the back.

The most likely way you will find success is to set all the settings manually and use a slave sensor shoe to trigger your external flash unit.

Of course I ought to repeat that I'm hardly one to speak with authority on the subject.
