DrJOnes,

I hope this is received as a tribute. I like your ribbon-winning photo

and have noted positive response from both male and female viewers of that photo. Its style is something I'd like to emulate but in trying to employ tethered shooting and review I decided to stick pretty closely to my target on this outing. I hope I can start to achieve some of the same appeal (on my own design) that you have in your shot.

My attempt:

GilP,
Thanks for your suggestions on how to manage a session.

This isn't my normal medium but since I had a willing participant and a photo that I wanted to emulate I decide to try. I'm sure striking out on my own in the future may generate more passion from my work.

Thanks for any comments/critiques.

Very good work Kevin. The work you put into this shows. I think it's one of your best.

very nice! two well meant nits: maybe it's my eyes, bugging out of my head, but the rim of the hat looks a touch blown. also, there seems to be a strange ghosting around the toes of the outstretched foot.

Very nice Kevin! As a constructive crit, I'll point out one difference between the two which to me adds really nice aesthetics to Dr. Jones version. Note how much more pointed his models feet are...almost "flexed". Your model had hers pointed, but relaxed. Now this may sound very subjective (it is), but I think the extra flex adds a bit more energy to the pose. She just seems more "dynamic" as a result.

As I said, thats purely subjective. Yours is beautiful in it's own right, but if your searching for that extra spark, I think that's one part of it.

Something else, I think the gradient light on DrJones' adds a little something, rather than the completely blown out white background. Just my opinion.

I agree about DrJones' gradient, to me it is actually what is giving it the "soft sun" look. the light gradient appears to surround her and fall softly on her form, whereas your background is just there without really lending much tot he effect.
But really, you did a great job at trying to emulate it. I know I couldn't have done anywhere near as well.

Hi Kev,

Great work! I hope I could do something like some day.

To me, it's DrJones models face, even if you don't fully see it, what makes the difference. She's not actually touching the hat, nor looking straight ahead, she's looking at the ground (looking down) and her hand just happens to be there, has nothing to do whit the hat. It gives some spontaneity to the shot, so to say.

Your model seems to be worried about the hat itself as if she's trying to hide behind it. Maybe if it were a little higher, showing the lower part of her eyes may take this impression out, or having her hand below the brim, as if she's on her way to raise it instead of lower it down

Anyhow, I really like yours, this comment is only a side effect of comparing ;). Once again I doubt I'll ever get to get even closer.

Carlos.

Nice work Kev,

I actually like the pose of your model better, but I have to say as well.. It's about the head..

If you could capture your model.. Maybe holding on to the hat like now, but slowly turn her head towards your right and downward, revealing more of her face, at least the nose and maybe slightly the eyes, while she does this movement, you snap along.. Just an idea.

Really like your work, thank you for sharing :)

Wow. Lots of responses. First off I wanna say Thanks for the comments. I appreciate 'em.

More to the point of some of the comments I see the gradient on DrJOnes' original shot as a by product of what looks like more of a spot. My shot out of the camera has a similar effect but due to space and needing to lengthen the composotion beyond the feet by a decent amount I had to blend the extra space and the gradient quickly gave a weird effect on my version so I had to work to remove it. When we took the shot on the screen it looked a lot more along the lines of having a gradient but that effect just didn't survive the editing process. That's also what produced the "ghosting" effect BikeRacer noticed around the foot.

As for the pose, we had several that ranged from very similar to the original positioning to more . . . our take I suppose. In the end, I selected this as being close enough to the shot that I found inspiring and yet slightly different. We never tried with her looking more to my right. Most of the poses ranged from more "straight ahead" to eyes downward. Her hand was at the brim of the hat in mott of 'em, though. At the end of the session I was satisfied that (A) we'd produced something I felt was close and true to the original vision (granted the original vision was someone else's work and not something I'd storyboarded out but this success was a decent step for me) and (B) we had explored several variations of this shot so that I could compare and evaluate. If this was an original shot of mine rather than an homage I think the time spent and the attempted variations would serve well for me as I edited the shot so that I could choose the shot that most closely resembled what I had on the storyboard and then edit to achieve the effect I wanted.

Thanks again for your comments,

Kev

Hey Kevin! here's my reply (from your email).

First the art:

While I understand where it is your comming from, I do not believe that it serves you to try and mimic a shot....there is not artistic intent in a mimic...it becomes solely a technical reproduction... and I firmly believe you are past this point.

Technical:
I will NOT compare it to Martins shot

It is OBVIOUS that you put a lot of time and effort into this shot and it shows. The lighting is pristine and the fact that there are no shadows from the hat shows that the lighting was well planed, the grey scalling, which I generally frown upon, works marvously as it feels so sun bathen. technically quite strong.
