Is it just me? I thought overall, they were boring and overexposed. Have I become cynical? I didn't rate a single one 10. I found a few 9's and 8's, but overall... blah.

What'd you guys think?

Well, I'm disappointed with mine, I can tell you that. Though it's definitely not overexposed.

No, I agree. I have found several 8's, 9's and at least 3 10's, but the majority are a little boring for me.

I thought I'd accidentally started voting for the metal challenge all over again...

Amber, I'm with ya in the metal comment. But I guess things that are outdated and no longer used are going to be old and rusty.

Oh well..... Maybe the Macro V will be more interesting.

Bring on the bugs and droplets of water!!

Is there a challenge that you have liked? You expressed the same sentiment towards Metal.

Yeah, I think that all of them are boring and do not deserve more than 5. Except mine, of course.

Seriously, though, I haven't had a chance to go through all of them yet - rated only 61 so far & commented on only 4, but I've found a few 8s and one 9 so far. No 10s yet, you're right.

I'll let you know when I'm done with the rest of 450 entries.

To my eye, Metal and Obsolete were similar in entries I guess. I was very pleasantly suprised with the Leading Lines as a matter of fact. :~)

As the recipient of one of your 9s (and the only comment), I thank you, Judy. ...Now if we could only convince everyone else to be so generous. ;-)

But I agree. It seems most of the entries either miss the mark re: obsolescence, or else fall down on the quality end.

My Obsolete entry was tongue in cheek and is dropping from a 5.9 to a 5.1 (sigh) oh well......... I had fun doing it.

it seems like people have confused 'obsolete' with 'old and broken'

Take a picture of something that has outlived its usefulness. It could be old technology, broken, discarded, outgrown, forgotten - anything. Exception: people (alive or dead) are not to be the main subject.

From the challenge description:

Details: Take a picture of something that has outlived its usefulness. It could be old technology, broken, discarded, outgrown, forgotten - anything. Exception: people (alive or dead) are not to be the main subject.

People who photographed something old or broken are following instructions.

No, it's YOU that are confused; here's the challenge description:

Take a picture of something that has outlived its usefulness. It could be old technology, broken, discarded, outgrown, forgotten - anything. Exception: people (alive or dead) are not to be the main subject.

Notice that "old" and "broken" are specifically mentioned, as a matter of fact. But the key definiton here is "outlived its usefulness"... By definition, anything broken fits in this challenge, andything tired and tattered and generally discarded as past its prime.

Robt.

although quite possible I'm sure its not easy to find something obsolete that ISN'T old and probably broken.

Glad you're going back to take a second look, I knew what I wanted to shoot but was afraid of everyone elses understanding of obsolete.

i didn't realize how broad the topic was.

Well my entry is whimsical and refreshing! "Two thumbs up" from Siskel & Ebert (Siskel's thumb sticking up out of the ground), "A refreshing, ridiculous, raucus, romp!" The Chicago Tribune

Only glanced at the thumbs page - doesn't look too dreary. Not too many suprises, but typical I think. All I know is I will not be voting 100% of entries - anything over 300 is a killer.

Topics depicting abandoned, damaged or forgotten stuff tend not to score high. Things just aren't pretty enough.

Eyevryone should be issued rose-tinted glasses. Guaranteed higher scores!

Don't you have to vote on 80% for them to count?? I agree, with the open challenges there are so many to view that you start to lose interest after seeing the first 250!

God, I'm beginning to sound like a grumpy old woman. I better go take some Geratol. *~D

After just a brief view of the entries there seems to be a confusion between old/delapadated and obsolete. It's going to be tough to vote.

LMAO @ all the photos of old cameras and film.
06/29/2005 12:04:10 PM · #25
as i went through the metal challenge i thought to myself at least a dozen times, it was a bad idea to have the obsolete challenge directly following - because at least 50% of the metal challenge could have been in the obsolete challenge.

I've not looked yet.

here i go!
