in the rules... if you need to show photo proof... what does this mean: "This original photograph must contain valid, unaltered EXIF data"

and how to I make sure my photos have it?
05/09/2005 03:48:21 PM · #2
All photos have it as long as you don't edit them in any way. When you edit you should always work on a copy do your camera files stay untouched.

Just keep the original file, exactly as it came from the camera card, in a safe place, and edit a copy. That original file is what you'll have to upload to us if requested. If you don't do anything to it the EXIF data will be there.

YES. You must upload the original, unedited, file with valid EXIF data. That's a good reason to work from a copy of the original.

Man, The SC is quick today. Thread had three replies within 1 minute, first two from SC members...good job SC.

thanks everyone.

Thats what I thought but I wasn't sure. I always edit from a copy and save the originals so i guess I don't have to worry! :)

Thanks! Note that we are eight time zones apart as well ... and that we're each probably supposed to be elsewhere : )

Since the SC is looking to help... I could use a backrub.

This must be eval time for the SC, they're all bucking for position, raises, fiscal year-end bonuses, etc., At stake, I believe, is who gets use of the company car, keys to the executive wash room, corner office with the nice views, etc.

Question: Do you accept files that have been converted to DNG, as long as all of the EXIF information is intact?

The file should be in its original, unconverted format.

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but if you open the file in PS, immediately save it as a TIFF or PSD and then work on that, is the exif data okay or does the fact that it was opened in PS at all cause problems? Not that I've ever gotten close enough to a ribbon to worry about it :( but just in case I get better over the summer!

I'm not quite sure what you're asking. Scalvert has just said that you have to submit the original, not the TIFF or PSD. You won't damage your original by opening it if you don't save over it, but if you're feeling very paranoid, copy your original to a working directory before opening, so you never touch the original at all for any reason.

As an aside, Photoshop does save most (though not all) of the EXIF information in the PSD/TIFF formats, and what it doesn't save you probably won't miss.

We cannot accept PSD files. So I'm pretty sure we can't accept the other one either. If it is saved in Photoshop, then the exif will show that and then we don't know one way or another if you edited the photoshop version or not. So NO don't save it in ps first.

Also, be sure that your camera supports EXIF data.

Digital Photo Professional saves all of the EXIF data when it converts to jpeg. It does show Digital Photo Professional under "Creation Software" though. Would it be okay to submit a jpeg like that as proof of an original?

When you "save as" the original file remains intact anyway. That's the correct thing to do. Never do anythign witht he original but open, and immediately save-as somethign else altogether. Then you're safe.

No, it's not the original file as captured by the camera.

One thing I've started doing is locking all the pictures that I've taken (from the camera) and when I DL them to my computer they have become "read only" files. You can still work with them, but you can't save over them.
