ok, not complaining, just asking:

Is everyone getting fewer comments than normal? I usually get about 10:1. But I am currently running closer to half of that, and no new ones in the last 24 hours.

The comments I have been getting are great. Do people feel like they are leaving fewer comments?

I know I have not even finished voting yet, it is such a pain to do at home on a dial up, and work has been busy, plus we are going through a RIF, and I do not want to be caught on the net while being behind on my work.

I only have 6 right now. Way less than I'd expect.

It is just so time consuming. And plus, I working on being a bit more tactful (in life in general) and found it is real "work" for me to put into words what I didn't like without getting very subjective.

I try to comment on pictures that I find striking (both in a good and a bad way). The pictures that aren't really good or really bad, I have a hard time saying anything about and I definitely don't want to say: "Okay, so you took a picture."

Then there is the ever-present humbling effect of this site. Seeing as I am averaging from the mid "4's" to the low "5's" I can't help but wonder just who I think I am to judge someone else's work. Even though I feel I am a very good photographer, I am obviously not THAT great. So I feel very hesitant to tell others how I think they could improve when it is very obvious I have a long way to go as well.

Oh ya, by the way, I have currently received 10 comments and it is really very funny. One person said the pic was very sharp, another wrote it was very out of focus. One person indicated I had wonderful DOF, the other wrote that I should have paid attention to the DOF better. There were other examples of the extremes but these were very confusing.

i have 28 - almost all of them with high praise - almost always followed by a drop in my score :(

I've got 26 comments, but very few of them have anything really substantial to say. Most are regarding a single feature of my shot, which most people seem to like. I think when people can't find much to fault, they don't have much to say. My most critical comment has come from our pal Hokie, who had good things to say and advise on, and for that I thank him.

Now I just want my score to go up a bit. Just a bit.

I have gotten 7 comments so far; all positive and accompanied with great scores. Most of the comments contradict one another.

Normally, by Tuesday morning my score is pretty much close to the final. This Tuesday morning I was at 5.681 but my score has been dropping steadily since then :(

Hey, I have only once cracked the top 50, but it does not shut me up. If you know what you like, and why you like it, great.

I am not sure I have gotten any real great suggestions from the top scorers, most of them come from middle of the pack folks. Maybe that is due to the appeal of my subjects? I am not sure. I usually photograph family, and usually just get the "cute kid" comments. But, everyonce in a while someone that shoots portraits will leave an insightful comment. I think if you can conistantly hit in the upper 4's to mid 5's is shows you know a little something about the craft, even if your images are not the most dynamic.

Anybody looked at Who's Online recently? There's a whole slew of people supposedly online for 5-6 hours????? I saw myself listed there with 4 hours even though I got here maybe 10 minutes ago.

Mmmmmm, what's up? Is some program messed up? Is that why my score is steadily dropping??? (looking for scapegoats).

Comments are funny. I got one comment indicating that an object in my photo was so real that I must have enhanced it's appearance with Photoshop. In another comment, someone asked me what that same object was. So the voters are divided between thinking my photo is too real to be believed, and thinking it's too non-descript to be recognized! heh!

Anyway, I think the reason for the reduced number of comments this week is probably that there are just so many photos in "quite good" (5-7) catagory that the comments are getting spread pretty thin. Normally there are a lot more less impressive shots that most people don't feel compelled to comment on.

I have 19 comments out of 194 votes. What's funny is that in an earlier thread I complained that my score was 5.664 and dropping... but my photo clearly caught its second wind and is doing battle in the low 5.8's!! Please reserve your ooohs and ahhhs for later.

Yes, I knew I would get hammered with the same comment, since it was a glaring shortcoming of the photo. But I was tired and my medication was wearing out, so I submitted what I had. Although what I thought was a cheesy way to display the item, some really like it. Claimed I'm I was creative and original instead of poor and hokey.

I only have 7 comments (out of 198 votes), which seems a bit less than what I normally see. I'm still voting, and have not had time to comment at all yet. Hopefully I will have time this weekend to go back and add some comments.

Zeissman -- a few days ago (in another forum) I threw out a few writing tips to help you with writing better comments. You recently commented on my Fruit and Vegetable photo and.......Wonderful improvement! Your comment is very well written, and filled with great information. Very good critique -- I think your commenting style is greatly improved!

I only have 15 comments, and though I am not surprised this time 'round, I find it interesting that I am not alone. I understand time is a factor with the number of submissions, but this site originated as a learning site given a topic. It does have that undertone of competition, but more and more lately there seems to be more interest in the "winning" than in the "learning"; fewer comments, comparing photos against each other rather than at face value individually, ... I'm not saying I haven't fallen into those traps myself... it is tempting. However, over the past few days I have contemplated my own reason for submitting...and even my views while voting, and it has led me to these thoughts - so, seeing this thread reminded me, and I thought it was applicable. Are there fewer comments due to these temptations (so to speak), or is it that there are more and more people who just don't know what to comment on or how to comment? I also have trouble commenting on every photo... not for time sake, but because I simply don't know how to help.
(Have I run on and on yet?) ;-)

I have 6 comments in 188 votes. This is my first challenge, so I don't know how normal that is. I have looked at other pictures in the challenge and I noticed that the really, really good ones get quite a few comments, and the really, really crappy ones get the same or a few more. Seems like the middle of the road ones are fairly devoid of comments though (somewhere around 6 out of 188). That's ok. I'd be happy to end up at 5. It's gonna be an uphill climb though. I think the amount of comments I'm leaving is entirely dependant on how sarcastic I am that day.

18 comments here, which is rather a high number for me and most comments are great with very worthwhile advice.

I think I am less competitive this challenge, I sometimes have a hard time with the "I am only getting a 5, and this photo is not as good as mine so I should give a it a 4 thing" Well, this time I am getting a 4, and I am not even thinking about it when I vote. This is probably my second favorite photo I have ever entered and I thought I would get oohhed and ahhed over....then the drugs wore off and reality came barging in like univite in-laws. But unlike the in-laws, I am at terms with it. All the negative comments are well founded.

Last week I was embarressed about my entry, and did fairly well. My score made me like my photo more.

This week I was very proud and am almost a full point lower. But I still love it. All the good comments helped ease the pain I guess.

I hope not too many feel they must vote in accordance to their vote received. I don't care what other people rate my photo. I vote as if I were at my job, ready to buy or not buy a photo or use it in an ad while looking at possibilities a photo (or design) has more than shortcomings.

Good things can be built on and shortcomings can be cleaned up. People always respond better to building on strengths and I was trained to believe that people of even modest artistic training can have some powerful visions.

My average vote given is more a result of giving a lot of 5's than giving lots of 4's, 3's, 2's or 1's. I dont give a ton of 10's, 9's or 8's either. I value giving a vote as much as receiving, I hope most other folks feel the same way :-)

Just to eleborate, just because it is on mind sometimes, does not mean I act on it. My average vote cast is 5.2, higher than my average vote received, and I think about average for this site. Also, I usually think most of the photos are better than mine. I try to judge each one individually, than review them later. I go over my votes 4-5 times during the week when I can to make sure I have everything right.

Five comments out of 195 votes. One of them paises the technique but says something is lacking (its boring, I guess). Same story with last weeks picture. :( I worked so hard to correct my the technical aspects, succeed and my scores are LOWER. AHHHHGGG.

BTW, I care about the scores only as a gage in self improvement. That's the problem with anonums judging as oppossed to class critiques progress is not being measured.

So far I have 19 comments, but I myself feel I am not leaving as many comments this week as in others, I've only left 5 so far. I think at the weekend I'll comment on more, but with the nature of this challenge i run out of interesting thigs to say very quickly.

I have 18 comments so far and I agree with Konador--its hard to comment most of the photos are technically so good that you run out of things to say--I dont think I have ever seen so many apples and the New Zealand Kiwi fruit industry must be having a wonderful sales month!lol

Hey guys,

I don't get much time to comment, so I tend to choose the top shots first, then the shots where I feel I may be able to help, then I work through whatever is left. I have yet to comment on all as yet, but in this challenge I have commented on 123 of the 200… I have dished out a heck of a lot of 10's and 9's this week – BTW, my score sits at 5.280. I find commenting as educational on this site as being commented on… Why does a picture look good, why does a picture look boring, why does a picture look really bad? I try to analyse the why, and I find commenting forces me to do this. If you can't be constructive, why not try and work out why you can't?

As for winning; if it isn't important, why keep score? I personally think that the higher I place, the better my picture, and I broke the top 100 for the first time in the candid challenge! I was pleased as hell… Check out my profile, it's riddled with low positions. But, I'm improving, thanks mostly to those that comment and what I learn from commenting. If you think a shot is superb, say why if you can. If you think a picture is utter rubbish, try and say why? I find it helps – although good communication skills would help occasionally…

This sounds more like a rant… Sorry… And lets keep talking…

James

5 comments out of 200 votes. Can't complain though, I am not commenting as much either, there are just too many entries. I would still like to see two different challenges every week to split the number of submissions somewhat, but that may yield less comments!
