None of these are related to the one I submitted - just wondered how these would have faired:
"Qup of Qoffee"

"L"

I kinda like the coffee cup, though I wonder about the legality of the border. The Camera shot's a yawner as far as I'm concerned...

Both look quite staged for me - maybe not "accidental" enough to score highly.

That's what I wondered about at the time. Wait - that's what I still wonder. I've seen people getting away with some things lately and thought this was no big deal. Not worth stirring the pot over though - the one I submitted is doing ok and I liked it the best.

Come on Robert - don't pull any punches! ;-)

I think over half the entries were "staged" in the sense that they are man-made items that happen to look like letters when photographed at a certain angle. That is not outside the challenge rules, but I see your point about scoring higher.

In this challenge I'm seeing a couple kinds of "staged"; some entries are apparently "found objects" where the photo is later rotated to emphasize the putative letter. Other entries actually appear to be "assemblages", things collected and arranged in some manner to make the shot. These latter or not accidental IMO and I am not scoring them especially well. The others are fine with me. I'm not concerned with whether the "letter" is man-made or natural; in fact, my own is man-made.

What I'm looking for, aside from the usual technical/compositional virtues, is evidence that someone went LOOKING and that they "saw" exceptionally well. I'm in fact disappointed that I didn't take the time to look harder, and apparently others are too because my technically truly excellent shot is scoring below 5, presumably because it was an "easy" shot....

Come on Robert, maybe your photo just plain sucks! ;-) I'm kidding. I scored them as you did - not happy with arranged items - and even less happy with those that had NO discernable letters and NOTHING in the title to indicate what letter they think was in there. It's not a "Where's Waldo" challenge for crying out loud. :)

After hours of deciding between two shots. I decided against this one.

The one I decided to enter is getting around 4.8 I think I may have chsen wrong... what are your opinions?

I found this one at a local aquarium, but I didn't have my tripod or external flash with me, so I couldn't get a shot that I was satisfied with. I think it's a great subject, but a lame image. Depending on orientation, the fish would also work as a p, b, d or g, but some of those look more like a 6 or 9.

IMO, your fish image 'as is' would have done far better than most. I'd at least have given the little guy a 7 or 8 which is more than I can say for 90% of the photos I've seen so far for this challenge. Not that my submission is even average at this point, lol, so take that for what it's worth.

I definitely prefer the coffee cup over the camera as well.

I missed the Accidental Letter deadline. I took this shot and intended on keeping my eye out for something better but lost track of time (preoccupied in camera & lens research).

How might it have done?

I titled it Jpeg

Not so well, I'm afraid. It's a messy-looking image overall and the J isn't especially clear. Looks more like an accidental phone icon to me. ;-)

EDIT- Oh, and I prefer the coffee cup. It's a good Q that doesn't seem contrived to me.

I think a tighter crop would have put more emphasis on the letter. You'd have gotten a six or seven from me. It's not brilliant, but the big bonus is that it's straight out of nature without manipulation and that th letter is easily found.

Like others, I don't have a problem with man made items. The challange clearly wasn't limited to nature. As long as the image isn't of something that was intended to be a letter I'm not going to take off points. Some of the staged images, however I think were staged to look like letters.

Part of the challange was also to make the picture "intersting. So I'm looking past just is there something shaped like a letter in the image.

Almost entered this one, but didn't realize it was basic editing. My current image is tanking big time, should I have re-shot this one?

My only other possible entry... not sure it'd have scored above 6, so I entered something else.

C for Canopy

Did not enter it, because I thought it was too lame (did not enter anything, for that matter). But what do you think?

I'd probably give it a 7.

great image, colors, focus and lighting are fabulous except for the background where lighting is a little patchy. How did you light the back?
