All this time I thought "candid" was concidered capturing a moment or reaction as it happens. I guess I was proved wrong.

And although my photo was not planned, I would like to say planned and rehearsed are two separate things.

I've had a comment saying it is not candid also. This is the kinda thing where I wish who commented, so that I could email them explaining. Thats all I can say without giving my photo away,

I have a feeling that for some people, a photo is "not candid" unless Alan Funt is in it...

This place is getting me down, I think I need a break

Just vote for the picture like it is Candid and we have to hope that it is. You can never judget about the picture if you don´t know who took it. I took a photo the last day when I was lookin´ for something to post and when I look at it now it can easely be set up but in my case it isn´t so PLEASE JUST VOTE LIKE EVERY PICTURE IS CANDID

[raises hand]

Add me to the list of people who have already received comments indicating the commenter's doubt as to the candid nature of my photo.

First of all, it's pretty cynical, and fairly pathetic if the only comment you can leave is "posed...".

Now, while there are a number of photographs this week that just a glance at the thumbnail makes it look posed or set up, as opposed to candid to my eyes, I will be looking at each and every photograph on it's own merits, it's aesthetic appeal and technical merit.

I went to great lengths to fulfil the letter and the spirit of this challenge, and was very pleased and proud to have captured and entirely candid moment that is, to my eyes, full of expression.

To have it written off as posed has irritated me somewhat, and while I don't wish to sound whiny, I would just hope that those who have yet to vote and comment will be a little more open to the possibility of getting a candid shot so good it appears that it might be posed.

Good grief people, is there really such cynicism?

Being fairly new here, the level of cynicism and patronising comments left on photos (not necessarily on mine) has really shocked me.

If you're taking the time to comment, is it so hard to try and make it constructive?

Ah well, my 2p has turned into a lot more. Don't spend it all in the one shop now.

Does it look to you that there are some photos that look like it was posed? Looking right into the camera? Did they know you were taking the picture? I went out all week and tried to get a photo of someone without them knowing it. Sometimes they would look at me and then smile or wonder what I was doing. I DID NOT submit those ones because I know the VOTER'S would vote down on that. You need to step in their shoes and ask why are they saying that. Just a thought.

That's bizzarre, lisae! Well, there's still no accounting for votes of "1" on obviously great shots, either.
I don't have any comments as yet, so..... maybe I'll be revisiting this thread later in the week (by the sound of the trend).

not really related to candid, I did not start ...; commenting is not easy at all. And sometimes it's easier, really, to express what bothers you in a picture than to express whe you really like. I started 3 weeks ago (did not submit this week) and I noticed that so I will try to do 'better' comments in a sense of always trying to tell what i like and what I do not like.

NO! Candid is not "Without being seen"! That's "incognito" or "guerilla" or something! There is at least one voting member of this community that totally misunderstands the meaning of CANDID!
Why can't you set up a photo and say "Hey", get the subject's attention and snap the shot? Is that NOT the epitome of "candid"? Good grief, people!

I got one comment that commended the qualities of my photo, composition, color, depth, etc. and gave me a 10, then another that said simply "Not really candid, 4.". What a load of %$#@! I can only hope this fugitive from 9th grade vocabulary class figures out what CANDID means! This must be the same person that spray paints "Your a loser" on the walls in downtown St Louis...

Arggggggh!

Just judge the damn photos, people!

11n, read this again and now without being so defencive. There is no need to put people down. You are being just as bad as the people who put stupid comments on your photo. Relax. I didn't say I was voting them down. You need to put yourself in THEIR SHOES meaning the voter's. They don't know what is behind the picture and how it was taken. :)

I knew this subject was going to create a hotbed of responses, and I had a feeling I'd be disappointed in many of the submissions, which I am.

I'm sure I'm going to offend some number of people here, but there certainly seem to be a lot of lame attempts for this week's challenge. I only commented on a very small handful of blatantly off-subject pics, but had to exercise a LOT of restraint.

Let's imagine that DP Challenge is actually a magazine, and we're all employed here as photographers. The magazine assigns us the topic of "candid," and we are off to meet that need. What would you think our employer would do if we came back and handed them a "candid shot of a lampshade" or a "candid picture of a toilet" (at least to my recollection, neither of these were actually used this week...)? Unless there's some incredibly creative work being used to make a lampshade/toilet react "candidly," I'd say we'd be fired on the spot.

The site is called DP CHALLENGE. In my opinion, we should be acting as though meeting the challenge is a paid job... and a lot of folks would be receiving pink slips today. And some people met the challenge, but only barely. Without being able to comment on specific photos at this point, I can only say that a lot of people "took the easy way out" this week.

I offer no apologies for taking the challenge subject into deep consideration while voting. Call me anal if you like. Those who obviously worked hard to take a well-composed AND on-topic shot get higher scores. Those who took took the easy route by snapping nice pictures of something off-topic (or "barely on-topic with obviously little effort") get lower scores.

Please feel free to sway me the other way... if I have misinterpreted this site, and should be saying nothing but great things about every shot no matter how I really feel about them, let me know...!

The problem to me isn't people who vote down on blatantly off-topic photos. The issue is people who take a very strict and rather arbitrary and uninformed view of the challenge topic and vote down anything that doesn't fit that. I don't think you'll really be able to tell what is posed and what is candid. So I think a sensible voter should, in most cases, just give the benefit of the doubt.

But there's really no way I'm going to change any of these sorts of voters' opinions that they're totally justified.

Just like alansfreed said.
You are working for a magazine company and your boss wanted candid. What would be candid in his eyes. Take in concideration that he is behind the desk and not behind the camera. He doesn't know that the person wasn't posing. He doesn't know that the person just looked at you at the same time the photo was taken. Only you do. The voters here are just like that boss. Hopefully we will all learn from this and do better next time.

Well my livelihood does not depend on this site. You are taking away some of the fun when you decide your way is the only way and bash people for thinking different.

09/02/2002 11:13:37 AM · #23
I must admit that I thought some of the photos in candid looked posed. I've got nothing to prove that though, so I voted as if they were.
