I received a comment that my Billboard entry isn't precisely 640x320.

First of all, it says "recommended submission size."

Second, it WAS before I added the border....with an even border all the way around, the total ratio will change slightly, but the photograph is precisely twice as wide as it is tall.

Geez....talk about picky.

This comment must be from the same person that aligns all of their rice crispies north before they eat them in their sterile eating environment.

I got a similar comment. I think the commentor forgot the smiley. My photo is 4 pixels larger in one dimension than recommended. Possibly this member is going for the lowest helpful comment ratio?

Geez... that sounds crazy! I always align my Rice Crispies to the South.

i know who it was from. not me though. got the same comment.
wonder if they have some sort of pixel ruler, or are downloading every image, and opening in an editor...

mine is in a 2:1 ratio - large dimension 640.

Either this person has unbelievably good eyes, or they are downloading and opening each entry to check the exact file dimensions......hmmmm....

Nah...just right click on the (full size)image and select properties.

edit: clarification

May I join the club??? I got the same comment too!!

Glad to see this thread. I usually take comments with a grain of pixels but this comment made me yell out OMG. Sorry if my 633x333 threw off anyones monitor calibration....A lot of nice billboards here.

normally, i'd laugh it off as just one vote, but somehow this sounds like too much fun to pass up. i think i will join the ranks of the sleep-deprived to check the properties of every image before voting, and take this size issue into consideration as i vote. after all, what could be more important, well, other than having text showing anywhere on the image...

;-)

I'm guessing we're talking about the same person here. If so, a little investigation shows that he may be nursing a wound from having entered a rather small photo and receiving a substantial amount of comments that criticized his uploading a pitifully small image....

Sometimes ya gotta scratch below the surface. (I wasn't one of his commentors, btw, so I sorta resent his taking it out on me.) Nothing to indicate that he's voting us all low, though....yet.

Good detective work, there.....I think you've nailed it.

how difficult is it to make your image 2:1?

why not? is it because the image doesn't "work" at 2:1?

this smacks of the same people that enter through the exit (or break any other insignificant rule) simply because there is no consequence - or because it's "more convenient".

"who cares" mentality

just my 2¢, but when you start a rant...well, monkey see, monkey do :)

CORRECTION: are we talking about non 2:1, or non 640 large.dim?

I'm surprised that the person is taking the time to measure each Billboard entry. Wouldn't the time be better spent studying the ancient works of Ansel Adams?

I can't speak for everyone else here, but as I said before, my image IS 2:1.....however, an even border changes the ratio of the file a little.

Edit for your correction....my large dimension is 640...but having a border makes my smaller dimension like 326 or something....which obviously isn't precisely 320.

I thought I had made it in those dimensions. Obviously at 640 x 324 I was trying. Consider the extra 2 pixels at top and bottom margin of error for the paperhanger and I think you'll see I was being charitable, not lazy. :-)

One would think.

since we're carrying on, when you say that "my image IS 2:1" you really mean "kinda 2:1" (my large dimension is 640...but having a border makes my smaller dimension like 326 or something)

why not just suck your border to the inside of a 2:1 box rather than the outside?

does anyone else distinguish between their "image size" and their "image plus border size"?

i say what you submit is your image and it has two dimensions. period. work out the math before hand.

Perhaps this could be made into an educational feature ... I will have no problem taking pictures of 2-3 actual billboards which are not in a 2:1 ratio -- perhaps it would be useful to post a variety of examples here : )

BTW: a tip for when you "miss" with the crop tool on something like this is to just change the Canvas size to clip the extra pixels. Foe example, if your crop ends up 640 x 324, just set the Canvas size to 640 x 320 and you will automatically clip 2 pixels from the top and bottom (or just top or bottom depending on how you have the options set).

A border is not part of the image.....it's like a frame.

Do you take your picture frames and cut them down to 8x10 and then cut your print down so it fits, or do you put an 8x10 print into a frame that is slightly larger?

Anyone that anal can merely right click on the image and go to properties, no need to download. And no it wasn't me. ;)
