I have been working on "Candid" pictures most of the week. I didn't find it especially hard to take pictures of people that were unaware of my presence, and they even looked good in my LCD after I took them, but by the time I got them to the monitor they had lost their flare. To catch someone in a situation that will have lasting interest is the difficult part of this challenge, at least as I see it. I get the feeling that it might take a lifetime for the casual photographer to happen on to the candid shot that will give someone the motivation to hang it, look at it, and tell someone else about it. I hope the rest of you had better luck than I did. I will post some out-takes next week to share my attempts.

You should enter one of them anyway!! If had "flare" for you the first time you saw it, and I'm sure it will have "flare" for us when we see it!! I love to see your photos! Try us! I bet we'll either love it or tear it apart. LOL *smile*
Take a risk! (i am)

That was my exact struggle Autool. It's three hours to go, and I still don't know if I'm submitting. What good is feedback, if you know the photos uninteresting is my current line of thinking. But I promised myself I wouldn't skip challenges just because they are difficult/uninteresting to me, so I'm making one last attempt through my outtakes to see if I can make something of interest from any of them.

I didn't say I had no entry, just that I had a lot of trouble. I think I may be going a little controversial this time though. That's different for me.

Yeah, candids are hard. Getting a good shot takes time and luck, and I didn't have either this week. No time during the week, then I got sick, then the clouds rolled in and took away my only reasonable "fishing holes". Oh well... at least I won't be distracted by my fluctuating score for the next challenge.

I'm submitting a picture for this challenge :) I haven't submitted since 4th of August so I'm kinda excited to be back in the game.

I hear that I took over a hundred Pictures and only two were to my own standards of a quality image. Good Luck All!

From the American Heritage Dictionary, we see verbatim, third definition: 3. Not posed or rehearsed: a candid snapshot.

So the challenge isn't about who is Allen Funt. It can be anything you want, however this implies some measure of uncertainty, which excludes landscapes or still lifes, for example.

On one of my stalking sessions this week I came by this sorta funky restaurant and the door of the employee toilet happen to stand open. It was a colorful room and it had nice sunlight coming in from the street. Took a shoot of it. Normally that door is always shut. I didn't submit it but I think that ought to have qualified (although would hate to think the number of comments it would have gotten that it wasn't candid).

I had severeal things going against me for this challenge. The chief one being that my wife had the camera most of the week.... and then she knew what the assignment was, so she was hardly candid all week. I just snapped a ton of shots of her until she became oblivious. Made me mad though that she had the camera most of the week - I missed some obviously good shots. Not that I blame her, b/c I never take the shot when I have the opportunity. Don't worry, no shots are of her. In fact, the shot I took was after work with the office camera. I could have done better with mine as it has more features, but I am excited about it... The last day of work I found some window washers that got me to go back to the office, check out the camera and start shooting. None of those became the shot that I submitted... I enjoyed the challenge though as it opened my eyes to all the shots that are out there...

Oh, that reminds me. One morning I was making shots of a guy washing the windows inside a brokerage firm which was at street level. I blatantly stood there making shots of him and he didn't like it but couldn't do a thing about it. However, he did have the last laugh. When I loaded the pictures up at home, the best one of him had myself prominently reflected in it. I had gotten so carried away about shooting this candid opportunity that I had forgotten to get myself out of harm's way! :)

I also had a very beautiful experience. I took a candid shot of a homeless (perhaps she lived in some sort of a home, don't know) woman with the shopping cart, etc. collecting cans from a trashcan in a back alley. Then she became aware of my presence and I pretended I was making a picture of something very interesting on the wall. Silently, she had crept up behind me, scared the heck out me, but she was just curious about the camera. I showed her my camera, told her my name was Helene and we started chatting. Asked her whether I could take some pictures of her. She agreed. After each shot I played it back for her. She was delighted. When I finally left she enthusiastically waved me goodbye with both arms. She was so happy having gotten that much attention from someone. This became a personal experience for me, too, and decided I would NOT want to submit the first candid shot I made of her because any rotten, negative comments about this woman, or about me prying on the unfortunate, would upset me a lot.

Journey, I'm sorry to hear you didn't submit one of those shots. Pictures like that can have a lot of impact.

the subject of 'candid' just did not match well with me... i've never been much a ppl photographer.

so, no entry for me this week. still, i am looking forward to seeing everyones submissions. i think it will be fun to be on the sidelines and concentrate on the next challenge without fretting over my own 'candid' submission. ' - )

Too bad you chose not to post that one. She liked the attention, she might like the fame! And don't accuse me of being insensitive, I've been homeless!
