Can anyone offer any suggestions for my new problem that has me in tears?

My 300D recently started hunting a lot more than it ever did with AF. I've now definitely seen it both with my 70-200 2.8IS and 100/2.8 macro lenses, and it may be happening with others too.

The autofocus searching seems to focus closer and closer, sometimes in little awkward jumps, until it reaches minimal focal distance, and then just stops there, never seeks back again.

So for example, I'll point at something 2m away and get focus. Then I'll point at something 2.5m away, and instead of focusing out .5 meters, the lens focuses *closer* until it just stops trying.

Any ideas other than sending my baby in for service, which will leave me without a camera for many weeks?

Maybe the focus sensor is damaged or just dirty. I don't know where those are, though.

Send it in for service. It will be gone for about 2-3 weeks, but it will work when it gets back.

Theoretically.

Here is another thread on the subject of Canon Factory Service. Don't be scared now!

I have the 100mm 2.8, 28-135 IS and 100-400L, none of mine hunt.

The macro is the worst but still doesn't hunt bad.

Yeah, I stayed away from that monster thread. I also actually have had a bad Canon Factory Service experience, with my 70-200 when the IS failed. Not very good bookeeping down there, but at least my lens worked when I got it back.

Looks like I'll have another story soon. Unfortunately, this one will cost me 2 weeks with my camera. :(
