A challenge where titles would be prohibited. Basically, an open challenge, where a photo would have to speak for itself, without an explanation in the form of a title.

Hopefully, that would bring more creativity into the challenges, unlike what has been seen in the past few open challenges.

hehe...I just looked at the 'titles' of your three highest rated challenge entries!

Edit: I think it's a neat idea, but isn't neat enough for it's own challenge. What if the challenge was something like "A thousand words" where the photo would have to be worth "a thousand words" and no title was allowed?

Yes, I know, the debates would be endless but it would force people to try and shoot a photo with story or emotion behind it...

Yeah, i am of a firm belief that if a photo is good it doesn't require a title... and as i mentioned before in one of the threads, slapping a title on some of the good photos undermines their appeal.

Imagine something nice and abstract, well pictured and really good looking. Do you really want to know that it's a part of a dust pan? Or, there is a nice portrait with a ton of emotions in it, what if the author didn't even see that themselves and titled it something silly, while, in fact, to you, the viewer, it's one of the strongest images ever that has nothing to do with the author's title?

I don't think a description is necessary (such as dust pan) but I think a title can be the finishing touch on a great piece of art.

I try hard with mine. For example, the biting irony of "contribution" or the frustration of "too little to play" or the melancholy of "let weary arms my story tell".

I'd like to think those are important parts of the work...maybe you're right, maybe I should focus on allowing the photo to speak for itself.

i agree that it would be an interesting challenge but i do like titles.. yurasocolov you do alot of abstract type stuff which doesnt really need a title(by the way i really enjoyed looking through your portfolio) but i think a title helps tell the story of the picture sometimes and adds more emotion and depth. it also gives the photographers perspective on some shots, which is at times interesting.

just my thoughts

Not only that, but also on allowing the viewer to interpret it to their own liking, because they are going to do it anyway and may not agree with your interpretation. So, in my opinion, it's best to not spoil the impression the photo makes by pushing your opinion down the viewer's throat.

Just speaking generally, not about your or mine particular photos, of course. And another disclaimer, sometimes a title is very much in order, i'm not saying absolutely that no photo should have a title, period.

i dont care what the title is, i see photo how i see it.

I don't think it's fair to have a photographer unable to title their work. They have every right to. Perhaps, the title could just be hidden during the voting process?

I could make up all kinds of reasons why this little girl looks so wonderfully intrigued, but the artist has let me into her world by explaining that to me in the title.

So, the photo could speak for itself but the title allows me to experience it the way it was meant to be...I don't need to make up my own reasons. Seeing what the artist was trying to convey is good enough for me.

I don't always think it should be up to the viewer to interpret it however they want...

Edit: It's all very subjective but I think it ultimately comes down to a decision made by the artist.

It works both ways... That is, without a title, an image is interpreted entirely as the viewer sees it. With a title, the artist points the viewer towards an idea he/she wants to convey via the image. It depends on what your objective is in creating/presenting the photograph.

I didn't really mean to start a discussion about it, there have already been plenty of those. Usually everyone stays with their initial opinion.

Just thought it would be cool for a challenge, to change things a little bit and to challenge people, that's all.

and i again agree that it would be a fun challenge, we could combine the two, out of the camera (crop only), untitled...like a little lost photo bieng found..

hey mike you posted my shot...that rocks!

I don't think this was ever done. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Standard editing. Titles make a difference, but for this challenge please post what you want and use UNTITLED as your title.

You're right, it was never done. FWIW, I wonder if making it a minimal challenge might be interesting?

That could work too, but there seems to be more participation with standard. Save the minimal for something specific IMO.

Commenters should suggest titles, even if it's not formally written into the challenge description.
