I have finally decided that I need a pocket camera ( besides my phone) that I can have with me at all times. I would like something that shoots raw, has a reasonable zoom ( not necessary large) and preferably a viewfinder ( I find screens very hard to see in bright sunlight). I realise that the viewfinder is probably not viable on a point and shoot type camera.
I have never really had any experience with looking at these kind of cameras. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations ?

If you want to spend the money, the Sony RX100 checks pretty much all your boxes, including a viewfinder (EVF with 100% coverage). Tghe zoom range is a little short (24-70 equivalent) but the lens is fast (f/1.8 at wide end, f/2.8 at long end).

Thanks Kirbic

Someone else recommended this camera as well. It is about A$1200 which makes it quite pricey. But I will have a look.

Also compare the features of the current version of the RX100 to the last version... you can probably still find the older version new, at a lower price. If the specs meet your needs, perhaps that is an option.

I had a RX100 v1 and I loved it. It died though after <2 years and a bit over 60,000 shots. A typical problem with compact point and shoots--lens won't extend. But I felt I got my money's worth--even though it was about $650 at the time.

So the v1 might be an option since it goes for around 300 or so these days. Certainly not the features of the newer ones.

DPReview has a recent "best of" review of pocketable cams.

If you don't care as much about size, you have more options for less.

I ended up not wanting to spend on the later models...just seemed so pricey. I tried, and so far have just stayed with, a Canon S100 that I bought from the refurb store for about $100. Not the 1" sensor, and not the SLR-like quality of the RX100 for some shots, but pretty darn good, and very pocketable. No viewfinder though.

There are a lot of 1" sensor cameras now. Perhaps worth consideration is the ZS100, with a 25-250mm zoom lens, or the new ZS200, with a 24-360mm zoom lens. It has a viewfinder you don't have to pop up, and a 1" sensor. I've been considering that. See the DPReview review for caveats. The newer ZS200 is still pending review. The RX100 series is still rated better than the ZS100, but what a wonderful zoom range in a pocket 1" camera!

BTW - If you don't care about it being pants pocketable, then some of the Micro 43 cameras would surely meet your needs, or even some of the fantastic Fuji rangefinder style cameras might, paired with a compact lens.

Also, here's a site that lets you see the camera sizes compared. I set it up with some of the options above, but you can add many more.

ETA: Cameralabs.com TZ200 review, say highly recommended

Thanks Neil
As stated I don’t want to replace my DSLR - just something that is always with you for the unexpected. I will check these out.
