The former 3rd-place image in the "So Bad it's Good" challenge has been disqualified due to the cloning out of a tiny distraction in the image. The photographer mistakenly thought it was a bit of sensor dust that could be removed in Minimal Editing but, unfortunately, this was not the case. Congrats to our new ribboner!

I really object to this disqualification and think the decision by the SC is unfair. If ‘etc’ was removed from the text I would have no objection.
I would like it to be reconsidered.

The rule states: You may use a tool to remove sensor dust, etc from your finished image. What is etc?
I did not know what the “fluff, spot, dust” on the birds beak was but I thought it qualified as “etc” and I cloned it out never dreaming I was violating a rule.
In context, my camera has been in a kayak for two months and it is a mess. I did not give the 'spot' a second thought.

I looked up the definition of Et cetera and thought I was well covered.
These are the synonyms:

along with others
and all
and on and on
and others
and so on
and the like
and the rest
blah, blah, blah
et all
what not
whatever

It's very clear to me, looking at the un-edited shot, that the fluff is part of the image, not something on the sensor. The key here is that the "etc." applies to "stuff" that is on the sensor, which might be dust, or something else (the etc.).
I do agree that the wording of the rule could be more clear, for instance:

You May:
- use a tool to remove sensor contamination (dust, etc) from your finished image.

If it’s any consolation I thought it was a very artistic and great picture with or withought the piece of fluff, the fluff doesn’t add or rake away anything and neither should a virtual ribbon, congrats.

Rake means take but rake does just fine.

Thanks for seeing my pov, Fritz. I hope it will be reinstated because at this stage of the DPC life cycle I think SC should bend over backwards to be fair.
And, John!!! How nice to know that you like it. You and Don have cheered my cause. I have fingers crossed that someone will acknowledge that
the rule is indistinct and will put the yellow ribbon back in my yellow specialty column.

I agree that the ribbon should be reinstated especially in this challenge. If the "fluff" theoretically made it a worse picture than it would have scored even higher possibly even winning the Blue! Therefore, Jane hurt herself by removing it in the first place!

FWIW (nothing, I know), I vote to reinstate. "etc" should probably not be used in any of the editing rules. What else besides dust gets on a sensor anyway? Ketchup?

LOL, in my case, ketchup on a sensor might not be that far fetched... but seriously, other contaminants I've actually seen include oil spots, small hairs, and tiny defects in the sensor "hot mirror" coating (digs, pits). I'm sure other possibilities exist. Since it is kinda hard to list all the possible sensor schmutz, I do think the "etc." is warranted, however it needs to be crystal clear, IMO, that the "etc." describes "other things found on the sensor" and not to "things found in the image."
