So what did you think of the portraits?

Here's my take, let's hear yours!

HAND HELDS & REFLECTIONS
I found as a group I wasn't too impressed with the hand held or the mirror shots. They generally got my lower votes - but not all of them, I think some people were able to pull those off, but in general, low vote from me. I think I gave 2-3 high votes.

SILLOUETTES
Same for the sillouettes, one of which was mine, by the way (guy reading manual sitting next to camera on tripod). If had to do it again I'd skip the sillouette. It's okay, but I realized - thanks to this site, you really have to have a good photo to pull it off. I gave one sillouette a high vote, no not mine.

BLUR
I was mixed about the blurred photos, some just look blurred, but then some came out pretty interesting, I think in general I gave them slightly higher votes than the rest, there were a few though that I thought worked really well. I gave 2 a high vote.

THE EYE
Balanced, some good some bad. 1 high, 1 medium vote.

THE ANGLED CLOSE UP
Well too close for me :-)

TIMER / BACKGROUND
My highest votes went to people who used a timer and had an interesting or simple background, that bunch of photos was generally good in my book, not all mind you, but I think that batch turned out pretty good as a group.

OBSERVATION:
I noticed that a lot of the women, used timers AND shot their portraits in Black & White. Not sure if it means anything, just thought it was interesting. Go back and take a look.

I pretty much agree with your assessment of the portraits except that in all the groups you mention, there were definetly a few that put some thought into their pics, of which I gave a higher number.

And yes, there's just something about nosehairs that I find hard to look at. :o) I think they were all brave and got points from me for that.

I hadn't noticed how many B&W there were of the women, but most of them are. Perhaps to hide flaws, maybe they just liked themselves better in black and white. Our lady in red doesn't seem to have a problem with color though and has turned in another excellent photo.

I think all in all, most were very creative. My hat is off to all that participated.

Aaaaaack! Cinnery, you're right on my tail! You're ranked 5.51 and I'm 5.52, now I know who the competition is! :-)

And yeah, go get out from behind that desk!

Where do you find these rankings?

HAND HELDS & REFLECTIONS

I gave really low votes for people looking directly into the viewfinder in the reflections. I liked the reflection in the ford image, but the photographer's face was just a camera. There were a few reflections that stood out from the rest, these were the ones where the photographer wasn't just a camera in front of a face.

SILLOUETTES

Mostly unimpressed. Most of them had nothing going on. I did rate the one with the guy reading the camera manual higher than the rest, though.

BLUR

A couple of good ones, but mostly unimpressed here as well. The one with the glass in the foreground was a great idea, and the glass part of it was executed well, but I think a different attire for the photographer would have made it great. I also liked the ghost one, and the two faces with different expressions was a pretty good idea.

I was just surprised at how many of us hid parts of our faces in our portraits. I thought that maybe a few of us older folks would do it but several young attractive people showed only half a face.

I gave extra points for humor and imagination. I love seeing a little bit of a photographer's personality in a photo.

Cinnery, I don't who's above us, but we're competing for a 5.53 ranking!
I wonder who that is?

These two shots stuck in my mind because at first, I swore they had to be pre-processed in Photoshop!!! Finally after taking a 2nd and 3rd look, I realized, hey! really nice job on those photos!

1. Clear - The guy in the window where you can clearly see the hallway behind.
2. 010100010 - The guy reflected in the split rock on a sunny day, blue sky, green grass.

The topic was self portrait... Generally these involve faces. (with the exception of some artistic abstract variations)

IF I TYPE EVERYTHING IN CAPITALS WILL YOU REALIZE I'M BEING SARCASTIC?
03/21/2002 02:35:29 PM · #16
No. It's the Internet.
03/21/2002 02:40:24 PM · #17
Maybe if we saw a picture of you being sarcastic......

HOW ABOUT AN OUT OF FOCUS TURNTABLE?
03/21/2002 02:57:09 PM · #19
Huh?

Seriously, I was just joking.
03/21/2002 03:02:41 PM · #20
I'M JOKING TOO. DID YOU NOT READ MY POST ABOUT USING CAPITALS?

this is serious. THIS IS NOT.
03/21/2002 03:05:42 PM · #21
FUNNY!
03/21/2002 03:48:23 PM · #22
Thanks for clarifying that. I'm not able to percieve sarcasm through text, perhaps if the whole statement had been in bold or italics AND capitals.
03/21/2002 04:34:54 PM · #23
HEY!!!!!!! I ALWAYS THOUGHT CAPS WAS JUST YELLING!!
03/21/2002 05:06:48 PM · #24
Myk, to get your average go to Preferences - tick boxes on righthand side.
03/21/2002 07:08:47 PM · #25
WhAt iF yOu TyPe LiKe ThIs, wHaT's ThAt RePrEsEnT?

Cool we should have a sarcastic challenge, though we could have one where we do our interpretation of YELLING too.
