Well my beautiful 5DMII is on eBay and will sell so now I need to figure out what to get to replace that. I was planning on a used 40D but wanted to see what everyone else thought. Money is the big issue (hopefully in a few years and can start getting nice stuff again but for now it needs to be cheap) I would like to find one under $250 but I could go to $300. I still have a speedlite and my 50mm 1.4 But that is about all the gear I am keeping for now. So do I just go with the 40D? Is there something a bit better for that price point?

Would going with a cheaper mirrorless be beneficial and selling the 50mm as I am pretty much out of canon gear at this point? Something like the sonya3000?

I am not up to speed on all the alternatives out there but I have nothing but praise for the Canon40D. I have taken some of my best/favourite photos on a 40D and I suspect you can pick up a good used one very cheap these days.

under $200 regularly on eBay, often with extras. Kinda scared dropping down from the 5D but I think I jumped up too quickly anyway.

My primary camera in now an Olympus micro 4/3 that was $250 with 2 lenses. Image quality is a little better than my 50D or (now dead) Rebel T2i. I was thinking about upgrading it to a 14-42 pancake lens s it can carry in a jersey pocket while cycling. I take a lot of risks with my camera, so I tend to buy good but inexpensive used ones.

Well, it's an old beast but I have an original 5D body that I have available, and I will let it go *very* cheap. Let me know if there is any interest.

Sony A6000 is the right one for you man. With an adapter you can even use the Canon lenses.

The a6000 will be over budget but the a3000 is an option.

This is the way I'd go. I still love my 5D, and it's more than good enough.

The Sony RX100 VII is the best small camera that I have tested. I think it would be a great experience for you if you use it.

Two points here:
This thread is nearly 6 years old, so no answers are relevant.
The Sony RX100 VII costs over 4 times as much as MinsoPhoto's budget.
