Can I use a Photomatix preset in Standard Editing? I would assume so, but what about if it's one of the more "painterly" ones?

Yes, pretty much with impunity as the rule stands now. There might conceivably be a preset that goes so far off the chart it can't be tolerated, but I'm not aware of it :-)
