This is the first time where I really don't feel qualified to vote.

I never quite understood when people came on the site and said that they didn't comment or vote because they weren't qualified. My answer was: how silly! You can tell if you like something or not! Vote!

But I've always hated it when collage came up in school. It just looked like a mishmash of stuff thrown together. (at least mine did!) Are you arranging them to remember your memories? Are you doing it for Art? Sometimes these are so disparate, how does that fit? Do we need "This juxtaposition of signifiers, "at once serious and tongue-in-cheek," was fundamental to the inspiration behind collage: "Emphasizing concept and process over end product, collage has brought the incongruous into meaningful congress with the ordinary."[7]

decoupage is one the techniques with which I was most familiar. I found the goo at Michaels, but it didn't help when I put it all over my monitor.

In looking through the images, there were a number of "oh cool!"s. I guess that's how you vote on this one? *sigh*

(don't mind me, it's an odd morning)

This site (by rule, reason, and explanation) has never been about votes being given based on actual criteria that can be used to hold a photograph against, what would otherwise be a reasoned set of criteria designed to evaluate the photo's merits against said criteria. A 3 is just a 3, and a 10 is just a 10. It only means something if it comes with a comment explaining it or we give it a meaning in our minds.

I get what you're saying, Wendy, and I too like to believe that I measure each photo I vote on by some set of criteria I've formed for that challenge, and feel uncomfortable when I don't know precisely what that might be (i.e. the Manet challenge for me).

So just take a page from the rule book, throw caution and criteria to the wind, and just vote. It's OK if you don't know what the number means. That's what they keep telling me.

I'm curious about the difference between montage, collage and other bits and pieces that make up one photo. I like the artsy stuff as well as the memory or history collage.

Trying to keep this from becoming a discussion on how to vote, the article linked in the challenge description describes a collage as, an art production, primarily used in the visual arts, where the artwork is made from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole.

A montage is, the technique of combining in a single composition pictorial elements from various sources, as parts of different photographs or fragments of printing, either to give the illusion that the elements belonged together originally or to allow each element to retain its separate identity as a means of adding interest or meaning to the composition.

When comparing the two there is one aspect that I take as central to what is and is not a collage, and why a montage is not necessarily the same thing. How much will it affect my voting? I'll tell you in a week. ;)

I have yet to vote.
However, since there seems to be many interpretations of the challenge topic - I am unlikely to find too many images I regard as DNMC.

I had fun voting this one. I was impressed by the creativity of several entries. Some made me wish I had the opportunity to redo mine.

I agree! According to the original link that Bear gave us ( Collage ) a collage can be any of those things in headings... photomontage, mosaic, decoupage, digital collage... etc.

Wendy, just vote. Even if you'll feel in hindsight that you missed the boat in understanding the challenge.
I find it very difficult to do a collage of any kind unless one is prompted to do so by some artistic urging. The collage reminds me of elementary school when we had to just do something, anything to show our alleged creativity. I missed the boat in reading the changes of the challenge, the description or the flag or whatever discussion was. I had misgivings about the challenge - have I had the time I would have made a collage with scissors and glue and photograph it. This is only an exercise. Yes, we are a contest site but the ultimate goal is to learn. And we do it in our spare time, don't we?

Absolutely, I definitely voted. It was just a interesting insight as to why people feel unqualified...

This is the first challenge I have entered for several months.I really enjoyed working on this one, but wish I had spent more time piecing it together.
I think most all the entries were very well and imaginative.
