Can i resurrect this topic to ask same question about my November Free Study entry - honestly i have no idea why it sucked this bad. Does free studies plays by different rules? Any feedback will be appreciated:

Thanks all - it seems like most of you think the softer focus on the main subject hurts this image. Still its probably not ascbad as the score suggests :(

Yes, and no :)

Same rules, but everyone is submitting their absolute best shot from the entire month. For it to place towards to upper half, the image must be outstanding in some way - location/subject; technicals/situational. Something we have either never seen before or have never seen done so well.

As others have pointed out, there is nothing wrong with your image. It's just rather pedestrian. Especially when comparing it to all the other entries in a FS. Technically, it's rather busy visually; the focus is not, I think, soft, but rather missed with only the wings are really in focus; the lighting is flat; etc., etc.
