Besides cameras, one thing everyone has in common here is the need to sleep and the health benefits and comforts of a good bed.

We have had our current bed for more than 20 years and it's time to change. We went to two mattress stores this weekend, and decided on a hybrid foam/innersprings mattress. But we didn't really look at the foam only ones too seriously because my wife was pretty sure she didn't want one.

That was yesterday...but now, I've been doing research and what I found is that 1) hybrid mattresses are basically no better than innerspring mattresses, and that 2) foam mattress users are more satisfied than innerspring mattresses, and 3) that a softer mattress is better for side sleeping (we were looking at firm mattresses).

(A lot of that new info came from here: //www.sleeplikethedead.com/ )

So I thought I'd put it to the DPC collective. Anyone care to share your experience, feelings, opinions on mattress type, firmness, and even brand?

Thanks in advance!

I have had so-so experiences with memory-foam mattresses. I'm not a huge fan. We use a high-end, firm pillow-top in conjunction with shaped, memory foam pillows, and that seems to be a winning combination.

We have a memory foam topper on our pillow top bed. I like it the only thing I don't like is that it absorbs your body heat and sometime by morning I am too hot, this only bothers me in the summer.

Haven't tried memory foam mattress but I know they retain heat. Great for winter but hell in summer.

Nother option you didn't mention are air mattresses, but I dont know anything about them either.

We have, however, just bought pillows from mypillow.com, and oh wow. What an incredible diference THAT makes! !!

Ha! Jenn beat me to it. We also have a firm, pillowtop mattress and that is really comfortable. We're due for a new mattress as well, so I'll be keeping an eye on this thread

We've never had a good one, but the medium firmness queen size mattresses in the $300-400 range seem pretty comfy to me. We have a little shed/cabin to stay in while we're visiting the in-laws and got a $300 mattress from Big Lots for that - feels great to us. The one we have in our house here was about $300 as well and it's a generic one from some other furniture store. Not as comfy as the Big Lots one.

I'm usually OK with anything a step above a low-end air mattress or a camping pad though.

I would think the adjustable firmness like sleep number and any imitators might be a good thing to have, but I don't know how much those run.

As far as mattresses go, I'm in the "firm, pillowtop mattress" camp and don't mind paying a small fortune for a good one. I use 100% down pillows of various thicknesses and find I grab different ones during the night depending upon whether I am sleeping on my side or not. I suspect, though, that this sort of thing is so much a matter of individual preference that one person's preference may not be of much help to another person. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I'm also a believer in a pillow-top. The one I have is pretty thick medium firmness. I tried a memory foam mattress an a topper but I agree with others that it just retains too much heat and gets uncomfortable in the middle of the night...esp in the warm climate I live in.

My aunt just got a cool gel mattress and I'm in love with it. That's what I'd like to get for my next bed. Oh, and she loves it too.

Sorry, Neil. I'm married so can only give couch recommendations.

I thought pillow top was it...until I tried tempurpedic. Wow, this mattress is amazing. No more sore back. Deeper sleep. Much less sink towards the middle.

There is almost no way I will buy anything else ever again.

Just a couple months ago my wife and I got rid of our old regular mattress and went with one of the Serta iComfort series beds. It's as they say, my wife can get up and move around and I won't feel it on my side, vis/versa. Really comfortable, we also got the pillows made with the same material. I sleep warm, so purposely mine is the pillow that doesn't retain heat. The bed is really great, pillows too - I sleep a bit better (but I can sleep anywhere) my wife sleeps a lot better, which is they key to all happiness :)

We have a "Full Box" mattress, we can turned and flipped is monthly for the first few years, now only occasionally. The majority of mattress' are only "Half Box" so you don't turn/flip them. It shortens their lifespan (more $$$$ for them). We also have a Memory Foam Topper from Costco (best buy at the time) on top of our mattress, so we can change it when it wears out. It has a 5# per square inch density/weight for distribution of weight. We like a "firmer" mattress.

My husband keeps talking about getting a memory foam mattress/sleep number bed. I think they would sleep very, very hot. My daughter and SIL went to a sleep number store to see what they wanted. Their system for getting the right setting is very interesting and worth a trip to talk to them. They only have 1 major sale per year in August.

Recently we got a memory foam for our camper...so far it's better than the piece of crap that came with the camper.

So there's my 2 cents....

We've had one like what you just bought for about ten years and it's the only one we've ever agreed we like. My only complaint is that it is hot, but Allex thinks that's a feature, not a bug. We never found a memory foam bed we could stand, and as we get older, we find we need softer, but bed choice is very personal.

Consumer reports does articles about choosing a bed once every few years, and what they say is you should go to the store and lay on any bed you're considering for about 20 minutes. When we bought our current bed we spent a couple of hours in the store laying on beds. We did the same thing when we bought a new guest bed a couple of years ago. It's a really average mid-priced regular mattress with no pillow top or anything. I've never slept a full night on it, but all of our guests love it.

This article will help you decide on which is best for you.

If you were near the San Francisco area, I would suggest a Mcroskey Mattress as one of those will last forever and be as comfortable on its last day as its first.

The New York Times article above comes from the Mcroskey website and tells you all you ever wanted to know about the subject.

Good luck.

When I think my bed is uncomfortable, I go backpacking and sleep on the ground for a few nights...when I come back, my "uncomfortable" bed is like floating on a cloud.

Rotating mattresses really, really helped. We bought a pillow top mattress that supposedly didn't need rotating. NOT. We have big craters on both sides. It's pillow top only on one side, so we can (kind of) rotate horizontally. But we can't flip it over and have lost half of the capability of making it comfortable.

Pillow top on both sides was better.

Supposedly this mattress had a 10 year warrantee. It was awful after about 5. The mattress company went out of business, and it looked like the warrantee was simply through that company. There was no way of working with the warrantee. You might want to check that out a little more in depth than we did.

My sister got a sleep number bed. Liked it for the first year. Hated it after that.

the only things i'll say are that we bought a pillow-top matress and had issues with it displacing in a weird way. had it changed for a non-pillow-top version and are much happier with our Firm matress.
and while my wife was pregnant, we used a memory-foam topper for her hips, which helped, but as others already stated, it was very "good" at retaining heat, especially in the summer when it made it uncomfortable to us.
winter time we used fleece or flannel sheets, so the heat was something we enjoyed as it meant we could leave the thermastat lower overnight without my wife complaining it was too cold, so we saved a little on the heating bills that winter.

i've had a Sealy, something, i forget which.. firm with a double pillow top. ive had it for 15+ yrs. its due to be replaced but its still very comfortable.

my only advice would be is to watch the depth because the sheets can be expensive, i need to use 16-18" depth sheets.

When we lived in the US, we had a pillow top mattress which felt wonderful at first, but ended up lumpy with big ditches and quite uncomfortable.
Back in a hot climate, it was important to stay cool, so pillow top was out because of our previous experience, plus because of the heat. If you like it warm, the pillow top will sort of snuggle to your skin and help you out.

I used to think I wanted a REALLY firm mattress, but eventually figured out that was only because I equated "soft" with the saggy, baggy, lumpy stuff you might find at a backpackers. There is a big difference between soft and saggy :-)

After much looking, learning, talking and testing, we figured out we wanted firm, but not rock hard, with very little fluffy padding on the top. Our mattress has three different zones of firmness (to support the heavy middle bits better).

Bring along your favourite pillow and really do spend a few minutes lying on it - there are so many choices... let your body decide what it likes best.

Oh and about the sleep number bed..... if I remember correctly, rayethier has/had one of them and is less than impressed by the repair bills. I'll point him to this thread so he can share his story.

Good lucky and sleep well!

Well Beetle was right on the money when she said that I experienced a significant amount of difficulty and expense with the Sleep by Number beds I had, but in hindsight, I would say that most of the problems I experienced were attributable to the fact that I purchased these in Canada.

I learned very quickly that the store where I acquired these did not have anyone to do repairs and truly could not be bothered to provide me with any significant form of assistance. Mine was one of those scenarios where you you stumble in the dark hoping not to get to bruised while trying to find your way around. Luckily for me, I was able to "MacGyver"
bits and pieces on an interim basis until I managed to find a helpful sould in the USA.

Once I managed to communicate with the suppliers in the USA, all of that changed. They graciously replaced the deficient items at a very reasonable price, provided me with written instructions on how do detect and deal with issues that might arise and actually send me emails to ensure that I was satified with the instructions provided and the items I had acquired.

I can assure you that if I do ever decide to acquire another of these beds that I most definitely will be purchasing it from a retailer in the USA.

As for the mattress, I rather liked the fact that there were separate pumps and controls for both sides of the king size mattress. I happen to like my mattress rock hard and the missus liked her ever so soft.

Mike...I'm a sheet snob!!! Go to Tuesday Mornings they have "deep pocket sheets" that will make you "sigh" and not cry at the register...watch the thread count....you want 600 or higher (expect groans at this level). The should be between $65 to 85 a SET (king) including pillowcases. This is the only place I'll buy sheets!!! Be sure to stick you finger in the bag n "feel'um". They should be soft n supple. Ok, I'll stop!!!
