My daughter has a school project in which she is making a magazine cover. She has chosen to do one for International Gymnast magazine. She has the image done (and I am quite impressed with it), but she doesn't know how to copy the font used for the cover. I am hoping someone here will be able to help her out.

Which font? "GYMNAST" or "Fantastic Fourth"?

Search for the magazine font, or cover. Lots of magazines have their logo online.

If you have photoshop it is easy. First look for the logo by searching international Gymnast under google images. I found a red one. Then copy and past it to a new blank document. Now to isolate the letters just use the laso tool to select a small area of the red, then under the selection tab click similar. It should now have selected all of the text since it is all red. Then copy your selection and then paste. Move your new isolated layer and you will see that it is all isolated. Now you can change its color, add a drop shadow like the original logo. The international was fairly straightforward font so I didn't copy and paste that. You should be able to just find a similar font and space it like they have it. Now that the font is isolated you can copy and paste it to her magazine cover.

Here is my results, top is the original, bottom is the copy I made. I also gave an example of the difference between the two by placing them on top of a random photo. Let me know if you have any questions. This literally took me 5 min to do. Once you know what you are doing it is very simple:

YMNAST is definitely OPTIBuckley-Eight. The G doesn't match, but the other letters are exact. The INTERNATIONAL part looks to be a stretched version of Coolvetica.

This place is awesome.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions, especially aliqui who gave my daughter exactly what she needed. Those links scared me at first though as they try to download an executable instead of just the font files. According to the website they download from, it will install a toolbar, which I didn't want. I was able to use a different link from the same page though that just downloaded a .zip with the font.

My daughter used sjhuls approach for the 'G', as that wasn't in the font, as aliqui mentioned. The problem with this approach is that the online samples are all too low a resolution, but she was able to copy the single letter over, scale it up and manually adjust it to make it look right. That would have been painful for all the letters, but not too time consuming for just one.

Her end result looks fantastic, I am very impressed with her work, especially since she only started using PS about 6 weeks ago. I will have to get her to do my editing soon. I will see if she will let me post her result here so you can see the result as well.

Again, thank you all.

Yay! You're very welcome, and I'm glad I could help. Using sjhuls' method for the G was clever, indeed. I tried using the WhatFontIs.com website to figure the G out, but apparently you have to have an account to look for single letters. I tried a few clever crops to make it think I had two letters, but it just confused the site, which lead to inaccurate results.

Sorry about the scary first link. It was probably fine if careful, but I'm as cautious as you are and probably would have tried to find another source had I noticed the EXE. The second link (dafont.com) is totally legit though and gives the ZIP. It's my favorite font site, and I use them all the time.

I'm excited to see the final result if she lets us see! Tell her how proud we all are of her and bribe her if necessary. :)

As long as we're talking fonts, you might want to check out this thread, which includes a link to a site where you can have a custom font made from your handwriting (or anything else which fits the template), and some other interesting stuff too.

You might also be interested in the documentary Helvetica the story of the now-ubiquitous font ...

A lot of magazines use either custom fonts, or variations on existing fonts for their main title. The highest quality way to recreate that is to get a sample image of their cover, either online (some have archives posted) or take a clear photo of one yourself. then trace the letters with the pen tool. you will get a perfect reproduction, which is scalable, and gives clean edges.

I had forgotten all about posting my daughters work back here. As I mentioned before, this was for a project for her Communications and Technology course. She had to create a magazine cover. She was very grateful for your help, and this is the result of her work.

The original image she took of her best friend at the gym after class.

The final magazine cover.

I was very impressed with her work, she was only 13 when she did this. Oh, she got an A+ in the assignment and the course.

PS - I think Team Canada might want to consider that as the team uniform for the next Olympics, not that my opinion is biased or anything.
