Okay boys & girls ... I had a fabulous photo shoot on Mt. Rainier Friday night.

Here's a link to the video.

There were some issues related to weather ... it was colder than forecast and the dew-point was higher - hence some fogging of the lens. I can fix it in the field but not in Photoshop.

Therefore I'm going back August 22nd or 23rd. Want to come?

That is really awesome!, I'm quite jealous. I am working on a time lapse of my drive to Cali but I have to piece it together in small bits due to my lack of a pc with any power. That is great tho, love the lights going up the mountain, is that climbers?

eta would to know your settings/specs on this?

Yes the lights on the mountain itself are climbing parties. My daughter is leading one that traverses Disappointment Cleaver. You can see their little bitty headlamps from 9 miles away. The eye is an amazing instrument.

Settings on my D800E:
aperture: f/2.8
ISO: 4000
Shutter: 15 seconds

About 330 frames.

Shot in RAW but rendered at 720P.

Charles, how are you finding out when the Milky Way will be visible? I wanted to try this in Maine when I was there but couldn't really find any good information about it...

Fabulous stuff...

Here is some info on finding the Milky Way

That is so beautiful!

So each exposure was 15 seconds. 330 shots without a break in between would have taken close to 1.5 hours.
Is that how long it took? Or even longer, with breaks between each shot?

I recently bought a remote control with time lapse function (from Shutterpug), and will now have to learn about these things.

I use an iPad app called Sky Safari. It lets you choose any city on earth or any latitude/longitude. You can choose any date … future, present, past and time. and it shows you what the sky will look like on that date, at that time from that place. So you'd choose your location in Maine, the date you's be there and have a look. Or you could scroll forward in time until it's visible. There may be a computer version of the app. Then I use the Photographer's Ephemeris to see sunrise, sunset, moonrise, moonset and the phases of the moon.

So I set Sky Safari for the trail I anted to shoot from. Used Photographer's Ephemeris to find a date with no moon. Back to Sky Safari to dial in the date and time … and Bob's your Uncle.

Here's a link to a tutorial i did.

I have an interval timer built into my camera … I shot 15 second exposures every 30 seconds … and yes, Virginia, it took hours. Froze my ass off waiting for it to finish. The intervalometer you bought will come in handy if you want to shoot longer than 30 seconds … 4 minutes for star trails, say. And i recommend turning off: 1) LCD display; 2) High ISO Noise Reduction; and 3) Long Exposure noise reduction. It speeds up saving files so you can shoot more quickly and reduces battery drain. For really long star trails, shoot maybe 20 four-minute exposures every 4 minutes and 10 seconds. Stack them in Photoshop and use a lighter blend mode.

Awesome..... I shall tuck your little pearls of wisdom away in my clever file for future reference. Thank you!

I've seen some of the news stories that come out of Florida. I wouldn't call it the "brightest" part of the country.

Sounds good to me, do I need to book a room, or will this be a day/night trip? Where exactly did you shoot this from? It looks like from the north side. I don't do dialysis on Saturdays anymore so the 22/23rd will work for me.
