Over the Christmas holiday my bro...sis in law.... niece & nephew came in town. My niece is 8. My nephew is too young. All this girl has ever fired was a single shot .22 . I had her firing my ar-15 (it's the only thing I knew she could handle). we went out to a friend of mines house to make sure it was sited in and she was hitting it in the bullsye.
She took my lead going out to the stand. It was her 1st hunt so as we walked out to the stand I pointed out tracks...etc. We got to the stand and she was perfect. We did see one buck but it was not in range. She didnt kill her 1st but she will

| I have not heard of the AR-15 being used much for hunting deer, but yea the .223 should have the knock down power at a reasonable range. Good luck to her first, and make sure she takes the bite out of the heart (wink-wink) |

While you are at it... teach her how to shoot with a camera also...that way she can get more than one shot at it. :O)

It's DPC's normal attitude towards guns and gun ownership... The majority of our group here responds to guns about like I'd respond to hearing that someone sent their child to 'Jesus Camp'... For whatever reason, they choose to not come out and directly say what they think, instead apparently choosing a subtle and ambiguous disapproval.
Although, it's not terribly surprising that our mainly suburban and artistic community would lean that way.

If it's the guns I can understand it from the DPC crowd. If it's the shooting of animals for food I'd love to hear that argument???

You also need to remember, most of the world doesn't have the exposure to guns to the extent we do here.
I'm not anti-gun. I'm not anti-hunting for food (though I am anti-hunting for sport). But I am anti-gun-exposure to children. They don't have the emotional maturity for hunting/killing. Only my opinion. |

And Cowboy that is awesome. A buddy of mine and I took his 7 year old to the camp during the Thanksgiving break and let him walk in the woods with us with his 4-10 to hunt squirrels. We put him in the deer stand but after about an hour he was too cold and wanted to go back to camp to play with the cat next to the fire. LOL.

I see your point. When my buddy takes his kid out we are with him every second to monitor and teach. When we get home the guns are locked in a safe. We also explain why they are locked up and how dangerous they could be.
Responsible gun ownership is possible and showing a child the joy of the outdoors with a firearm is possible as well. I agree it could be tragic when a parent does not follow these simple rules. |

As a kid who grew up hunting, let me tell ya, there's nothing that sets a kid straight about the power of a gun better than a visual and visceral demonstration of the effects of high-speed lead upon flesh and bone. You can tell a kid shit all day long, but once they're staring at a real demonstration of the effects, there's no doubt at that point that the kid 'gets it'...

Why? Because it can be dangerous?
I suppose that it also would follow logically that children shouldn't play sports, or race in motor sports, or go hiking, or swimming, or any activity that is inherently dangerous?
I'm honestly hoping that you have some reason beyond 'children shouldn't be exposed to danger'... My thinking says that if you aren't exposed early, you're always going to be at least somewhat intimidated by the danger at best, and terrified into avoidance at worst.
(Disclaimer: I grew up shooting guns, riding horses, exploring wilderness, making my own fireworks, butchering animals, riding three-wheeler type ATV's, and generally doing whatever I pleased..)
