Okay... So maybe this place isn't exactly boring... but we could use some diversity. Is it too much to ask to have one of the 3 weekly challenges rotate between Minimal and Expert??? Just make the Thursday night challenge rotate between Minimal and Expert and even Basic if you want. All offer great opportunities to learn. Minimal teaches you the discipline of the camera, Basic is great for those who just dabble with photoshop, and Expert teaches you the power of Photoshop... That would still leave 2 Advanced challenges at any given time. Anyway... just a thought... back to regularly scheduled programming...

i haven't been real involved lately. my processing style lately is too much for advanced and not enough for expert and minimal is just boring. plus i've been shooting lots of portraits and DPC hates portraits.

i pick it back up when TPL2 gets started and i get motivated again.

Crying Babies in each of the rulesets.

Yes there are.
05/29/2013 09:51:31 PM · #7
I don't really like expert cause I don't have the skills nor do I have the time to shot and pp.

I could not really figure out why am I here but that is different.

I really like Advanced.

If you like Basic, it's legal in Advanced.

If you like Minimal, it's legal in Advanced.

If you like Advanced, it's legal in Advanced.

If you like Expert, wait a week... we'll have one for you.

:D

Are you suggesting I'm a crybaby because I'm asking to rotate a ruleset in one challenge a week? When all of the challenges for the past two weeks have been Advanced?
05/29/2013 10:35:04 PM · #11
It's not unreasonable to expect at least one of these every two weeks? Something at about the same frequency we see Expert challenges.

I like advanced too, same as I like smoked beef brisket - but let me tell you, after 10lbs of smoked brisket, I'm pretty tired of it - and challenges aren't much different - we get A LOT of advanced ruleset challenges - wouldn't be too terrible to see a bit more variety.

Better challenge suggestions would help. I'll start:

Challenge: Halley's Comet
Ruleset: Minimal Editing

Unfortunately expert editing took a turn for the worse at DPC. We imagine only illustrations, cartoons, elaborate settings ....Endless nights of fastidious work ...intricate stories....
Expert editing gives really a bit more freedom. It can be advanced editing PLUS one layer or texture or a small added detail from another shot, two shots on top of each other or just plain editing.....
A lot of people admire pics at 1x because they are "expert editing" but of various degree of manipulation, sometimes quite minimal but mighty effective.

Expert editing shall not equal children book illustrations

Agree with mariuca. The amount of work and skills involved, which I do appreciate and respect, sometimes might allow a certain amount of kitsch to slip in

what mariuca said.

actually, tiberius, there is always some kitsch about to slip in.

I can remember when Basic and Advanced was all there was, and nobody called it "boring" on that account. And so it goes...

I second/third what Mariuca said; the pitfall of DPC's "expert" rules is that they seem to have created a situation where you HAVE to do complex photo-illustrations, fantasy scenes if you will, to have much of a chance; and few of us are skilled at (or have an interest in pursuing) that sort of work. Meanwhile, there's a whole other, wonderful potential layering of "mood" into photography that the ruleset permits, and that many of us would like to pursue, but there's not a lot of incentive to do so within the challenge framework given the heavy apparent bias of the voters towards extreme illustration/fantasy.

I don't really have a horse in the race (I just enter whatever strikes my fancy), but I can understand why many people just don't bother.

In short, I am in favor of expert editing the way each of us understands the freedom of means that it gives us.
Voters have to look with more interest at every image and shall not expect to see only one genre of illustration.
Voters shall understand that expert editing doesn not mean buiding sets, hiring a raft of models, buing paraphernalia and morne and more elaborate equipment
Expert editing allows us to use with freedom and abandon all kinds of photo techniques - let's do expeet ed'g pinhole, minimal editing plus one piece of collage ... Let's use the freedom sparingly or elaborately and let's not get fixated on one type of image only.

lol.... Not sure if anyone saw the subtly of this comment but I laughed.... It proably does not need to be on the top of the list hey :-)

It is a pity that "expert" is being interpreted as total fantasy. We have a couple of editing luminaries whose vision is quite fantastical, but that is their vision. However, expert can also be used to add clouds to a blah blue sky, or clone out a larger, unavoidable element, or use different techniques which are simply not allowed in advanced, such as the cloned cuff on my Great Dames image, which except for that cloned bit, was advanced editing
05/30/2013 02:33:25 AM · #23
Expert has surely become fantasy and the scoring has followed suit, it's fine by me as we need a bit of everything for everyone, it does take the joy out of it for those who don't want or can't do that kind of edditing though, not wanting to push into the fantasy side of things, i no longer see the point in entering expert now. I would still love to see more variation with minimal and basic being used more, seems logic and fair to me.

I enjoy seeing the uber-creations; rather than seeing us steer Expert challenges away from that, I'd rather see us use more modifications to the Advanced rule set, either on a challenge to challenge basis or permanently. Joanna's cuff was illegal, but perhaps it shouldn't be; perhaps Expert should be for composites with the Advanced rule set being a bit freer. Tools like 'content aware fill' now make what would have been 'expert' (skill level) edits part of a normal workflow. For what it's worth, I'd actually like to be able to use textures under Advanced (with a special rule) from time to time. I think better use of those little flags would help mix it up nicely.

Make all of them Expert then you can do as you please.
You may love Minimal then go ahead and do it's up to you.
At the end of the day its the final image that is voted on however it was created.
It would also eliminate all of those silly old DQ's
Burn those rules I say.
