Of course I am very happy that my entry finished in 3rd place but somehow I am a bit puzzled that I only received 1 comment during voting. Well actually 2 but the last comment was received just before turnover. I mean the score would suggest that people liked my entry but the lack of comments suggest the opposite. Thus quite disappointing in a way really. I hope I don't sound too ungrateful.

Honestly?

I was one of your 5 voters, and I didn't comment. (shame on me!)

Why? Because, I think, as the artsy folks here would say, "it's a complete image"

You really hit some folks right, it's very smooth, and wonderfully reflective - but there wasn't anything of a story here, the image is everything, all wrapped up in a neat package. No questions, no reason to ask anything, or say much. The image is just the image, and it's a good image too, but there's nothing really left to say.

I've seen this myself with some entries, they strike the right chords for a solid score, but fail to resonate enough to garner a commented response.

I think mystery, story, and emotional connection probably are the biggest driving factors when it comes to what does, and what does not, attract commenters. Remember this can also swing the other way, with tons of comments and a really awful score, probably more common than this result in fact.

Thanks Cory. You explained it very well and now it makes sense to me. Yep the other side of the coin you mention is something I have indeed experienced too.

Yeah, when I looked at your picture I though "wow, that's a really good detail, nice reflections and light, good composition, and can't really find anything technically wrong with it. It just works well". And you got a good score from me. That's all.

ETA. Congrats on the yellow!! :)

It would be cool if there were stats on comments. For instance, average number of comments for certain score ranges. I wonder if it even correlates?

It seems like I've had some shots in the 5.9 to 6.1 range that don't garner very much in the way of comments while the stuff 5.5 to 5.9 get more comments. I would guess that if a shot just misses the mark like the 5.5-5.9 shots do that people feel comfortable giving a reason why it's close but just off and that's why they get more critiques.

nothing garners more comments from people than a gyaban/samantha image. all you need to do is steal one of their images and post it up as your own. you'll blue ribbon and get flooded with comments and faves.
short of that, you could steal one of mine and get a shoddy score with a pair of comments, but i refuse to give up my current entry that has more comments during voting than i've received on any image before, the secret to that will be revealed shortly if you'd like to stick around to see.

Some of these challenges create perfectly lovely photos, but ones that just don't make an emotional connection. I understand exactly what you're talking about. I've ribboned with photos that have only received one or two comments during voting, and yet sometimes have gotten scores as high as 6.7 range. I couldn't understand why I would get a score that high, but no one bothered to comment.

Then I realized that they were rewarding a photo that was well done, that fit the challenge, and that they thought should place higher than other photos, but when all was said and done, there was nothing about the photo that really spoke to them.

I do the same thing.

I don't comment on that many photos in a challenge. I'll happily give high scores to photos that are well done. But I only comment on the ones that really make a connection -- ones that are different, unusual, something I'd want to hang on my wall, something that surprised me, something that made me sit back and say "oh my!! I wish I would have taken that photo!!". Or, photos that I think had potential, and I have something to say that I feel could have improved the photo, I'll sometimes make suggestions. It's just that life is so busy -- that when I look through a challenge, I don't think of commenting, so I only end up commenting when I'm inspired to do so. (I should really change that, but time is so short...)

Some challenges are made for comments -- I love commenting on the abstracts, because so many times I'm so pleasantly surprised or blown away by what I see. Automotive detail, even though people can do it extremely well, isn't really a genre that's going to make an emotional connection with me. So I'll reward good work with good scores, but I usually don't comment, because even though the photos are well done, it's really not something that inspires me.
