Reminder: Basic editing

Question: Silver Efex should be OK without any control points, right?

05/13/2013 01:40:28 PM · #2
Yes. Be careful which presets, though. You can't use any vignettes, edge burning, framing, etc. So check the finishing sections to make sure those are turned off.

I've done pretty well in the last few street challenges, but I'm just not motivated to go out hunting this week. You already know who is going to pull the blue anyway.

Maybe it won't do as well once it's been "officially" validated ... ;-)

I went out and in the first 5 minutes I was yelled at.
I just wasn't slick enough.

Try using your cell phone if your camera handling draws to much attention. They take pretty decent pictures and are discreet.

My cell phone is crap. (Old school flip phone)
I saw an old man fishing and he was sitting in a corner behind a big umbrella. I was shooting from the hip but he was looking down so I brought the camera to my eye took a shot and as soon as I was done he looked up. 1/2 second more and he would have never known.
He was pissed and I kind of felt bad, then he started pissing me off so I snapped back at him and walked away.
I don't think he was as old as I think he was he just didn't have any teeth so he looked old.

Cell phone cameras are ubiquitous. Anymore, the iPhone camera use provokes as much resentment as a DSLR with big eye lens. The other "issue" is depth of field. I have not yet figured out a way to force my iPhone to shoot narrow DOF. (If anyone has an app for that, I'm all ears.) So, I've transitioned to using a distance separator and 200mm lens. I like the ability to capture a natural pose/expression, unencumbered by subject's knowledge of being filmed. Yes, it's more I-Spy and intrusive. But, frankly, once someone knows they're being photographed, their behavior and expressions change.

After I finished my photography for this challenge, which I thought I had done without notice, the main subject approached me and questioned my motives. I identified myself and purpose, and promised prints to sooth the waves.

As soon as someone sees me shooting them while street shooting, I immediately smile and wave. I think it throws them off a bit. I've only been told off once (and I didn't smile and wave that time because I wasn't even shooting them!!) I was shooting a public square, rainy, nighttime, and someone came out of a parked car and yelled at me for taking pictures. I assume he wasn't with his wife. I should have taken out an add in the newspaper: do you know these people?)

As I've done more street photography, grumpy subjects have become less of an issue for me. I believe it's all about attitude. If you skulk around taking furtive shots, then people get suspicious. If you're more up front and you are friendly then people, in my experience at least, are OK. I've heard it described as 'candid rather than covert', which sums it up pretty well I think. I stumbled across this guy's tutorials and his approach pretty much mirrors my own. The other thing I did for the first time this weekend was to listen to my iPod whilst I was shooting. I really liked it as it achieved 2 things. Firstly I just sort of zoned out and was able to concentrate on shooting and secondly people seemed to recognise that I was in my 'own little world' and ignored me. Odd, but I really dug the experience.

If you're timid about getting in people's faces with a wide angle lens or feel like a "voyeur" behind a telephoto lens try shooting "from the hip." This especially works well with cameras with articulating rear LCD screens and is not hard to get the hang of. The subject may not even be aware of having gotten photographed. Even if the image comes out blurry from camera/subject movement it can be considered quite acceptable and artistic in this genre.

Also, you don't have to shoot at street level. An interesting shot would be to get some elevation and shoot down on the street such as from a building you have access to. You can get a little adventurous and creative here. I once climbed a light pole to get interesting POV.

Hah! I've had the same experience. I use my iPhone for street photography, with earbuds. People are distracted by the earbuds, it's the oddest thing.

I think I understand your question. Go back and read the early posts in this thread. Some nik silver presets are apparently ok as long as they are applied to the entire image and not used selectively, but some are not. You have to look at each preset separately.

I was lucky enough to get out to two different cities for a few hours each in the past week...I have learned that I am not very street photography smart! I have so much more respect for those of you who can do this! Shoot, shoot, shoot, upload, delete, delete and repeat!!!
