I'm pretty sure I've suggested this challenge before, but it never got taken up. For those of you under 20, Dire Straits was a British blues-rock band who turned out many radio-friendly hits - Sultans of Swing, Money for Nothing, Industrial Disease, Making Movies, Lady Writer, Romeo and Juliet, Walk of Life - and several that never charted on this side of the pond but are fantastic songs, like most of the songs from Telegraph Road.

The lyrics have always been amazing and the video for at least Money for Nothing was groundbreaking back in the 1980s. I saw them on their Brothers in Arms tour back in '86. Some long-haired American blues guitarist by the name of Stevie Ray Vaughn opened for them.

I would love to see a challenge in honour of this band. It's high time. Mark Knopler was/is an amazing lyricist. We've done the Beatles and Rolling Stones several times, I think we even did The Who not too long ago. C'mon, Langdon! Make it so!

At the local cricket club, they had a juke box. For 10 pence (5 cents) you could play a song.

So 10 Pounds later, they took Romeo and Juliet out of the duke box!!!!!!!!!!

Lol

What?! That's a great song, though by no means my fave DS song, still one I enjoyed listening to.

"Telegraph Road" is one of my favorites. "Brothers in Arms" as well. Love Over Gold is one of the finest albums ever made.

I'm a big Mark Knopfler fan, so I'd be up for this. I already have an idea for when it happens.

@ Marc923 Nothing wrong with planning and even doing a few test shots of your idea, now, so when the time comes (which could take awhile) you have the concept and execution nailed down. Just make sure you don't enter the wrong one like taken outside the challenge dates!!!!

I would most likely wait for the challenge to be announced before shooting. But I can already visualize what I would want to do.

Great band and great music (as so many great British bands from these days: Genesis, Pink Floyd, Supertramp, Queen, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Fleetwood Mac and many more). A challenge about DS is a good idea IMO.

Sure, I have no problem with that, as his voice, lyrics and guitar playing are very distinctive and what really made DS what they were. I'm glad his subsequent solo career has worked out so well, too. Down Every Street is one tape I quickly played through - love My Parties!

Great we can sift through one of his 3 hit songs.
I just don't think he was big enough to do a challenge on.

Well, here's a list from Private Investigations: The Best of Dire Straits & Mark Knopfler.

"Telegraph Road"
"Sultans of Swing"
"Love Over Gold"
"Romeo and Juliet"
"Tunnel of Love"
"Skateaway"
"Private Investigations"
"So Far Away"
"Money for Nothing"
"Walk of Life"
"Your Latest Trick"
"Calling Elvis"
"On Every Street"
"Going Home"
"The Long Road"
"Why Aye Man"
"Sailing to Philadelphia"
"What It Is"
"The Trawlerman's Song"
"Boom, Like That"
"Brothers in Arms"
"All the Roadrunning"

I think that's a little more than 3 hits. Then add all the other songs from the albums. Tons of material to choose from.

nygold, instead of making remarks like that which only make you look small-minded and stupid, just opt to sit it out. Nobody has to shoot for any challenge if they're not feeling it.

It's not a challenge yet, it's a suggestion you put out for discussion. I would assume that means you wanted feedback and not just people nodding and saying "yes". While his comment is a bit snarky, nygold should be able to add his input on the suggestion as well.

I tend to agree that unlike the other band/musician challenges, the list of hits is pretty small.

Yes, I know everyone's entitled to an opinion, and if people think that MK/DS wasn't prolific enough, fine and dandy. If people don't like the challenge idea, they don't have to take part. I just see no point in posting daft remarks, except to deliberately piss people off.

I think that Dire Straits are an important part of the history of music and they deserve a challenge suggestion, so...
