So I was looking at this camera, and maybe I need to take a deeper look but, if you're in the market for a new camera, why would you buy the Mk3? Are the extra af points and 1 more megapixel worth another $1000? Seems like you're better off with the Mk2....

3 is better than 2. :) You're fishing for reasons to resist upgrading, aren't you? :P

You really need to study it more!!!

If I had Canon glass, I'd probaly buy it, good iso performance, good frame rate, much better autofocus, as it is I will stick with Nikon and Its stupidly big megapixel new boy.

Just gone from 2 to 3 - reasons:

Better ISO, I do a lot of low light model work and this gives me the flexibility to use lenses other than my 85mm f/1.2 in those situations.

Also, I'm guessing that I might get some usable shutter speeds in less than ideal conditions when shooting at 400mm with my 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6

So for me, getting more out of my glass.

I'll certainly take the better focussing too.

I have concluded that I don't need it. If I take shots in the low light it is always long exposure on the tripod. I use the center point for focusing exclusively. I missed focus quite a few times, especially when taking macro shots so now I lock in the center point on all shots. I don't do street photography where you'd be better off with fast autofocus. I also do not do wildlife so I am not bothered about the fast frame rate. Nor the sports. And.... I don't have $1800 to spare (that's the price difference in Australia, you are spoiled in the US!).

I haven't ordered MKII yet. So what's wrong with your new camera? Why are you still looking at MKIII?

Yeah, thats probably the case, i was just thinking with the price difference you could get a mk 2 and put that other $1000 to some glass....

Canon claims an improvement in image quality, and if that proves subtantially true then I think a lot of people will pay the extra cost:

"The camera’s newly-developed 22.3MP full-frame sensor provides increased resolution and finer detail, enabling the capture of a wide range of scenes, from sweeping landscapes to beautiful portraits." (SOURCE)

My favourite things to take pictures of (so far) are:
my daughter competing in gymnastics
animals, wildlife, especially birds
landscapes

...it's only a matter of time.

I was comparing it to the D800 on the Imaging Resource site comparometer, and at high ISO, 6400+, it blows the D800 away IMHO.

every manufacturer says that their latest provides an improvement in quality, it's how they sell.
i'd look at the two and judge that for your usage, will you notice a 'drastic' change in picture quality over the 1mp? and if so, will it be noticable enough to spend the money?
do you need this now? could/would you be able to wait until the mk4 comes out to buy the mk3 at a lower price (or the mk4 for a similar price to the 3 now)?

all factors to consider...

This thread has the potential to cost me a lot of money!! :(
(trying to sell the idea to my husband but he's not convinced, yet)

well I got mine yesterday and have been playing. i reckon worth it.its a new camera basically. new amazing AF. tracks the subject brilliantly. The quality at iso 6400 is brilliant. the amount of noise on the whole is so low. the feel and build is top notch. and has 6fps which for me really helps, as a wildlife photographer wanting quality and now speed too!

OK Alex, now this thread needs pictures!

I wonder how much the Tsunami and problems in Japan have influenced these prices. It was a hefty price increase--above that of the Nikon D800E for the camera.

And I was looking at lenses at B&H for it...

Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Autofocus Lens
$1399 regular price (now $1299)

Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Zoom Lens
Price:$2,299.00

Whoa, that's some price hike!

Yes, it is! I bought my 24-70 almost a decade ago, and paid A little over $1100, so in reality some price increases were inevitable, but the prices of the "II" versions of some of the lenses are astronomical. In some cases, though, the street prices have been closer to reality.
The price of the 5D MkIII body is actually slightly lower than the price of the original 5D was in 2005, accounting for inflation.

In order to achieve a top notch landscape shot which usually takes place during dusk or dawn, you will always need a tripod regardless. If the camera technology becomes so advanced one day that say an ISO 12,800 will produce the same image quality that say today's 5D Mark II does at ISO 100, you will still need a tripod in order to compete with the images shot at ISO 100 for that time period.

Isn't a tripod one of those things for old shakey people ?
