The only problem is, she doesn't want me to spend it in an ungodly way. Don't think that'll work, unfortunately...

| I'm sure you are truly deserving of this good fortune. I can't wait to get MY email!! Seems like these things pop up all the time. It's a little bit interesting to see what little differences there are from one scam to another. |

For many years all has been quiet on the PM.
I have been off the grid of the spammer's radar.
No more. They have found me.
(Hmmm, the above description sounds like it could be the opening of a TV show;-P )

Heard on the radio the other day that scams like this raked in approximately - are you sitting down? - $700 MILLION last year. I am assuming that's on a global scale. So sadly yes, there are suckers out there willing to buy the Nigerian prince/dying widow/orphanages stories...
One of the saddest cases I heard about, firsthand, was an elderly woman who was taken by a lottery scam for $38k CDN. What makes this one exceptionally tragic was the fact that her son (my prof), a PI specializing in fraud, constantly warned her to be careful about such scams....*sigh* |

419 scams are big big business. They've been around for longer than email and the internet (they used to send old-fashioned letters to rich businessmen with similar proposals)
The scammers themselves aren't viewed as criminals in their own countries, but get respect because they've obtained all their wealth using 'clever' methods.
And it's not just about stealing money from old ladies. Things get dangerous too. Victims have flown out to meet them at airports and get kidnapped or murdered when things go wrong.
So don't mess with Julie. Hell hath no fury like a scammer scorned. |

Many people merely delete scam emails or forward them to friends to share a laugh. That would be fine if everyone thought the letters laughable. The truth is that people in desperate financial situations will cling to even the most outrageous source of hope for relief.
As I pointed out in on the previous page, it is an accumulation of evidence that gives law enforcement the edge.
At one time the US Secret Service ran what was called the Nigerian 419 Task Force. After 9-11 that Task Force was dissolved and the Secret Service became a division of Homeland Security. The Secret Service maintained the address for scam email reports for several years after that, but now the address no longer exists.
In response to this, Fraud Aid has developed an extensive program to accept all scam emails.
The information culled from the emails is gathered and analyzed. Qualified information is forwarded to enforcement agencies and service providers worldwide.
