Incredible damage in my area- far worse than Hurricane Irene. About half the roads around my house are still closed. Trees are down everywhere (including across the power lines to my house), and schools are closed at least through tomorrow. No power, water or heat at my house. We're making the best of it.

hang in there, shannon! i really hope it's not as bad as irene...we had friends without power for almost two weeks. on the good side, at least you won't lose what you have in your fridge ;-)

We'll have power Friday according to the electric company. Central Pennsylvania got slammed, too.

Well, where are the pictures? How come you have internet access?

I may get power back soon (they're working on my street now, and I talked a crew into fixing the line to my house), but I won't have internet, phone or TV for a while. Those lines are still on the ground.

Chinese food and WiFi. ;-)

I posted one shot of our snowghost. This is the massive branch that ripped the wires off our house.

Sorry to hear that Shannon! We expected the worst here, but the forecasts were wrong and we dodged the storm, getting only about 2", which is gone now.

We had reservations at a hotel because we expected to be out of power (and heat). Thankfully, we didn't need it.

Nice snow ghost though!

We lost this lovely tree to the snow about a half day later......

We got wind up the wazoo on the Cape, pushing 75 mph, but no snow.

Hey, I remember a drawing my Mum sent me once, the winter of '93 or '94...it was a sketch of Dad, shovelling 4 ft of snow off the deck...on SSI!!! So don't get too smug! ;-)

No heat, no power, lots of tree damage. Second night of 40's in the house.

I feel for you, we lost power once for 10 days, no heat, electricity!!! (We did have a woodstove downstairs, but the bedrooms were cold!!)

Power came back on just before midnight (shockingly). Cable and telephone lines are still on the ground, and will be until Thursday night, but they're attached and working. It was down to 49 degrees inside the house despite a fireplace and two portable heaters.

We got off really easy. A light dusting that turned back to rain before it finished, so nothing at all on the ground.

If I were you, I'd be looking into connecting a generator to the main breaker for fail-over. You've had some bad luck lately. Burst pipes could be bad news. My brother is out in the boonies and has a pretty slick setup.

We already have a 7000w generator, but no transfer switch. We just ran extension cords to power the refrigerators and a few other things. The furnace and water are hardwired though, and this storm may finally convince my wife to go for the switch.

...or switch to Florida.

My brother has a switch to accept electricity either from his provider, or from his generator, which is in an enclosure behind a large shed about 70 feet from his house. He buried the wire. The generator can't power his entire house, so he picks & chooses via another breaker box. Something like that. I should take a picture of it next time I'm down.

Same here. With 7000w, we might get away with the water pump, furnace, a refrigerator and a few lights. I wouldn't expect much beyond that.

Driving around this morning, it looks like an F1 tornado hit the whole area.

We have 5000W generator with a 6 circuit manual transfer switch. We can run the fridge, the furnace, the water pump, and a pretty good selection of lights without issue. With 7K, you should be able to run almost the whole house. The transfer switch is key to making the generator useful and SO worth the investment. I would highly recommend getting an electrician and a 10 circuit transfer switch and have them set it up - you should be able to get the transfer switch, line for the generator for about 750-1000 bucks installed. We have an external plug that we just tie the generator into and it works like a charm.
