i have made the argument before in other threads and now its time for its own. I just dont understand why we can topaz the crap out of a picture and not give some dodge and burn to give the eyes some pop, or smooth out the skin, or selectively desaturate an image without planning the colors only to circumvent a rule anyhow, why cant we clone out out minor imperfections besides dust or hot pixels?

these are edits that we should be able to apply to ALL of our images with the exception of a few special per year

Let just have:

Minimal editing
NORMAL editing
Expert editing

How about you picking up a few ribbons in some of the advanced contests first.
Leave the basic folks alone.

Yeah, seems kind of a waste.
"Minimal" is great to see the true photography skills (Once in a while)

"Normal" for your everyday (advanced) submissions, and

"Expert" to show your "No holds Barred" Processing skills...

Works for me...

Its not about ribbons, its about the fact not being able to do something we should be. Like it or not but photo editing is a tool of digital photography and we need some of the limits lifted.

I vote for this, as well as the option to crop in minimal editing.

get rid of it and have a straight out of the camera..... no editing at all.....

I love basic editing. It pushes people who take pictures into getting it done better in camera and not relying on gimmicky processing to carry their image.

It's kinda like learning how to swim before doing a triple flip off the diving board. Too many people are too eager to jump in the deep end and haven't figured out how to float....

That would be Minimal...

How is it OK to run Basic through Topaz but not spot edit??? doesn't make sense! Get rid of it.

+1 - I hate not being able to spot edit. It's so stupid to not be able to sharpen just eyes, or clone out a stray hair.

Wow. The rules have changed since I was last entering. Guess that is why there were so many over topazed but poorly composed and focused shots. Since topaz and the like can be done in basic, then I guess there really is no point to basic anymore.

Maybe there should be more minimal editing challenges then.

I like the mix of rulesets. Not everybody wants to 'shop the snot out all their shots. Each ruleset is good for making you improve different skills. Besides, we are not seeing as many basic challenges as before.

OK -- I'd be fine with making Basic more basic and getting rid of lots of stuff.

But the big difference between Basic and Advanced -- and where it makes a real difference what quality original you capture -- is the ability (or lack thereof) to edit selectively, adjusting colors through masks, dodging/burning/cloning, etc. But there's still a big difference between that and Minimal.

It is likely we will be reviewing all the rule sets to some degree "soon" -- but around here I'm afraid that may seem glacially slow to most of you ...

YOU MAY:
use filters or stand-alone utilities designed to preserve image integrity (such as Neat Image, Unsharp Mask, Dust & Scratches, and color correction tools). These filters must be applied uniformly to the entire image, and must not be used in such a way that their use becomes a feature.

No “effects” filters may be applied to your image, with the exception of Noise and Gaussian Blur.

I haven't been around a while but to me I think topaz is an "effects" filter that by the rules should not be applied. I haven't caught up on all the new changes yet but at the same time I don't think a dodge and burn should be allowed in basic editing. When I think of basic editing I think of resize, rotate, crop, adjust saturations, and brightness. Dodge and Burn to me is more of an advanced edit that most people have no clue how to do.

But that's just me...

I didn't think you could use Topaz in Basic either, I was just going off of the OP. What do I know?

I don't think topaz is supposed to be an effects filter, I think it just ends up looking that way.

Not interested in filters, but I would be happy if spot editing would be allowed in basic editing.

It completely depends on the type of topaz (there are many), and then the various presets. Most are perfectly fine for basic. I use topaz on all my entries at this point, and most you'd never be able to tell.
