I don't know if it's the heat, or disasters around the world, but voting gone crazy here... I seriously think people started to vote without even looking at the images carefully.

RAAAAAAAAAAAAANT!

Maybe it's those people at NASA again.

Ah, the weekly voting trends rant, so familiar and comforting. That and a good cup of coffee starts my Monday of on the right foot. (OW, c**p!, that's the one attached to the injured knee!)

I wouldn't blame them a bit either... :O)

Just some observations. These are not based on any research of the data, because I don't have the data.

1. Seems like there are fewer total votes on each image, even considering the generally lower number of entries.
2. More and more challenge participants are choosing to not vote in a challenge they have entered.

These things are contributing to an increase in the impact of the each residual voter. In the most recently completed challenge, my entry received 137 votes. In my very first challenge on 3/6/06, I received 300 votes.

So, my "back of the envelope" calculation is that more votes would smooth out some of the irregularities. I'd sure encourage everyone who enters a challenge to vote in that challenge. Come on! It's character building to hand out fair and objective scores to images in competition with your own.

It's controversial (and maybe set in stone), but the 20% voting requirement can cause "cherry picking", or worse. I'd strongly favor a move to at least a 50% voting tally before one's votes register.

Hmm, due to the much smaller number of challenge entries these days, a 50% voting requirement might not be a bad idea and it would discourage or at least dilute the effects of the cherry pickers. We should be able to vote half a challenge or, IMHO, we aren't really putting the efforts forth that participation in this site should command. My 2 cents.

I voted on all the flower entries in about 30 seconds.

Adding more restrictions to the voting process will not encourge more people to vote. Quite the opposite.

Might be true. Do you have suggestions which might increase member participation in voting?

A few off the top of my head:

- Extend the voting period.
- Extend the submission period (better entries will make voting more enjoyable)
- Run more popular challenges (Masters FS?)
- Bring back th DPL.
- Open voting to everyone. Maybe we would get Firebird back?

You're slipping, couldn't you figure out some way to blame Obama for this? or at least Michelle? I'm disappointed in you.

I guess you're referring to votes cast leading up to May 21st ;)

NO to extending the voting period.....a week is long enough.

Langdon is my Grandfather. He built this site with his bare hands out of WWII surplus jeep parts and a Briggs & Stratton lawnmower engine. Sure, it belts out a little smoke, but it still chugs along just fine.

...what the hell are you still doing on my lawn?!

LOL! I once looked up the term "jackwagon" after hearing it on tv for the first time.
