If things are getting a bit stale when shooting a débutante (new) model, what I often do is frame the image move my eye from the camera and say to the model that " I want you to take a deep breath and break for a second..." It is often at that moment I take the shot and more often than not it's a keeper.
Another couple of techniques I employ is the close your eyes technique (you can see this technique used in this video for VOGUE Magazine //www.benjaminkanarekblog.com/2010/06/01/steppes-ulan-bator-vogue-brasil/) . I ask the model to close her eyes. I then either wait for her to freak out and open them, as they don't know what is going on or I ask them to "OPEN!" at that moment the expression is usually out of the ordinary and their facial expression's are really pretty amazing. As a result of this you get some really pretty dilated pupils. Also try the "concentrate on squeezing your forefinger and thumb together and only think of that pressure or apply pressure to the right or left ball of your foot... Or concentrate on a specific point on the wall and then scan the wall to the left or right. Watch what happens. The models expression has less to do with her concentration on her pose than "why is he having me do this or this is strange etc..." and what you get is often really interesting.
I will sometimes ask them to drop something and pick it up or throw something up in to the air. It can be an imaginary object or the real thing. I will also ask them to go through the bag they are holding and look for the object that I have placed in it. In the the look for my comb in my bag sequence, I will tell them not to look in the bag, just feel for it while looking in my general direction. Some of the stuff you get can be really interesting.
Using a fan often gets some interesting results, that is if the hair stylist is OK with that. Another little trick I sometimes employ is the placement of a mirror just to the right or left of me and facing the model so that she can see herself. The model is more apt to experiment when she can get some positive visual feedback. I have gotten some pretty good images using this technique as well.

hmmm, well i guess there is that aspect of it, not unnoticed, i guess i just try to glean what i can for the learning factor. |

Anyone else might have already been slapped for repeatedly copy pasta-ing his blog, but in this case it's a successful fashion photographer, often with interesting insights.

I suspect you missed some :-/ - I see this self promotion post everywhere on the web there is a place to stuff it..... I had been following his blog but dumped it just cause I could be bothered with the spam methods he uses. I am sure I miss stuff but hey :shrug: |

| Yeh he does have some very interesting insights and techniques that people could learn from but he's made 5 comments in the last 4 years and all his last forum posts have been linking back to his website. |

I think it's neat and I plan on using some of these techniques.
I hadn't heard of the blog so appreciate the promotion, after all, what's it there for if not for people to visit?
*thinking* uh, oh, I have my website on my profile. is that shameless self-promotion?
eta: Oddly, I saw the links as a sort of "validation" for the techniques posted. As if to say, "check out the implementation of these ideas."
On the other hand, my wife says I'm too optimistic. Maybe it is a horrible thing he's doing.

If you can benefit and if it saves you your photo shoot and if the client is happy, I have done what I set out to accomplish on several levels.
For those of you that have spent you hard earned money on fallacious workshops etc, I would think that what you consider my spamming as being a welcome change.

Yeah, a little... But then again he lives in France, and I live in the USA. Annoy each other is what we do...
Then yet again he is published, I am not. He makes money with his photography, I do not. I would claim to be a pure artist, but my images are there for all to see...
In the meantime, there is always the ignore selection if it gets to be too much. I actually did find his post interesting, just don't tell him. You know how those people in France are... ;-)

Not that this is relevant, but I am not French, but English speaking Canadian from Toronto..But hey, "You know how those Canadians are?"
