So I just reached the 20,000 pictures mark with my camera yesterday.
It seems like a HUGE number to me, but I am fully aware that I take pretty few pictures a week compared to some of you.

So I was curious, how many pictures has your current camera taken to date?
I am expecting some pretty big numbers :-)

ETA: My number is since August 2008. Though I know for a fact that I reached 10,000 in June 2010, so I do believe it is growing exponentially as I get into photography more.

I am almost to the 10,000 mark I am sure I will reach that shortly as I am only a few hundred away from it. But I have only been doing photography for about a half a year now. It will be fun to see numbers from people who have been doing this for a long time.

I'm around 40,000 on my XSi/450D now...give or take. Had it a little more than a year (15 months).

About 40k since 11/2008 on my 5D2.

32,190 on my D300 since Nov 07. I'm not shooting that much really. In fact, the camera hasn't been out of the bag since mid-Feb.

Is there a way to know on my Canon 40D? I know I have taken over 10,000 since November!

For people who have been doing it a long time, they've more than likely gone through several cameras.

My camera goes to 9999, and then starts again at 0 when labeling photos.
So I just looked at how many times it made that switch. I am assuming thats how most people would have to do it.

For my Canon, there is an additional "serial number" way at the bottom of the EXIF data, which shows the actual number of shutter clicks -- it prepends a "1xx" to the four-digit Image Number (the one which resets at 9999); see highlighted data below:

===================================================================
File: - L:\Photos-Originals_Mar_2011\110309\IMG_8295.JPG

Make - Canon
Model - Canon PowerShot S3 IS

DateTimeOriginal - 2011:03:09 16:33:47
DateTimeDigitized - 2011:03:09 16:33:47

Image Type - IMG:PowerShot S3 IS JPEG
Firmware Version - Firmware Version 1.00
Image Number - 1058295
Owner Name -
=================================
Note that the "105" means that the image counter is on its fifth cycle through the image numbering, and it's actually taken 58,295 photos total.

My K100D has about 54,000 and has since been relegated to back-up duty. The new-since-November K-R has 5,900 +/-. Shoot a lot, throw out a lot...

I got my camera late Friday afternoon and it now has in the neighborhood of 500 shots on it.

Absolutely correct. Also when you move the directories from the card over to the computer you would see sub directories under the DCIM directory labeled 100CANON or 101Canon etc. So say for instance your camera is approaching your first roll over and you have taken 9999 shots. Now you take say two more shots. When you look at the folders on the card under the DCIM folder you should now see two sub folders. One labeled 100CANON and another labeled 101CANON the first folder would contain any photos still on your card up to the 9999th one, and the second folder would only contain 2 photos.

Paul, I think that means (using your example) that the camera has taken 68,295 shots which would include the first 10000 shots taken that fall into the 100CANON folder. So you have that first 10000 shots plus 5 iterations.

Yes I know that but I have no idea how many times it has done that!

Just checked and mine doesn't have that.

Last year I took 30K photos with my main camera, and 10,000 with my back up cameras combined. I average about 40K a year total. Since Jan 26th when I switched over to Nikon I've taken 3300 photos with my main camera and 1500 with my backup.

Just under 10K in 15 months. I will most likely pass the 10K mark this weekend.

well, i'm on my 715th "folder" and each folder seems to hold 10,000 pictures. don't know if the folders started at 0001 or 0100 or what as I bought it used.

Basically, my camera has taken A BUNCH of pictures.

They start at 0100 I'm pretty sure.

BTW if your numbers are correct you need to call Canon and let them look at your camera. Something about 7 Million shutter actuations seems a bit far fetched for one shutter!

The folder numbers *are* correct in that they have increased consecutively since I got it. However, I don't remember what "folder" it was when I got it (bought used), and the former owner *may* have done something to make it start higher.

Yea, it seems like a lot, and I do take a lot of pictures. I would never advertise that I had 7 million+ actuations, though I do figure it is above the average, by now. (I've taken 5000 since the first of January, this year)

With mine, the first folder was Canon_101 -- it creates a new folder every 10K shots; folder Canon_102 contains (receives) the shots from 10,001-19,999. With my camera, I think I once triggered a new folder creation step by using a card which had been used in another camera without re-formatting first.

But MattO is right -- I would be suspicious of a count of 7.15+ million shutter actuations.

Sure sure, just because you Nikon guys only have shutters that are tested to 300000 cycles, don't get jealous of that Canon awesomeness..

:)

Well the 30D was introduced in 2006, if bought new it would be 5 years old, to shoot 7million photos with it, you would need to take roughly 3800 photos a day every day. :D

Combining the auto-triggering time-lapse feature with burst mode just might do it ... especially if you can shoot tethered to a computer with a nice disk array. Hard to get those sports shots that way though ...

ETA: I wonder how cameras count shutter actuations when capturing video ...

Alternatively, it could simply represent a continuous activation of the shutter for 389 hours - totally doable (on AC power anyway). :)
