Is any one on this site a pet photographer? Do you think there is a market for Pet Photography? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I'd suggest PM'ing shutterpug as she's managed to create some serious successes with those hideous little beasts she owns.. ;)

Yep, among many other things, I am about to launch headlong into pet photography.

As far as the OP's questions: Yes, I been looking into it for quite awhile and I believe that there is a market for pet photography, especially when I see what is passing for pet photography overall these days. There are a lot of people calling themselves pet photographers but I don't see much in the way of quality images of pets.

I think also that locations and potential clients makes a big difference as to whether or not you feel like there is a market for pet photography. I think that I am fortunate to live in Miami (that's about the only good reason to still be here) in that there are plenty of people here who are willing to spend a good amount of money on their pets. Despite this down economy I have found that those who own medium to large businesses are mostly unaffected. They have downsized and streamlined their businesses at the expense of the 'little people' but they are more profitable (on a personal income level) than ever before. I have met so many people in Miami who fit this description and they are spending plenty of money on things that aren't necessary.

Anyway, I have started to build a pet portfolio so that when I am ready to start I can do so looking like I've been doing it and doing it well for awhile. Here are some of what I have so far:

- - - - - - - - -
- - - - - - - - -
- - - - - -

It's a start, but I want to have a lot more to show before I start promoting this as a branch of my business. I need to add some pictures of dogs, birds, and people with their pets.

hideous? How dare you call my beautiful babies hideous. They are so sweet.

I don't have a pet photography business right now - though I would like to. I just don't have the funds to go head long into it.
Waiting to win the lottery first. lol

I have had a yorkshire terrier image be used in a yorkie magazine as the centerfold years back. And then there is the big check winner of my pugs on Avanti press card. Back when I did have a side business in pet photography going - which the only marketing was flyers hanging in pet stores - I did alright with getting clients and having them pleased with their images.
When and if I can ever get my own business going again, I am thinking of doing mainly shoots at the owners home, at parks, etc as I feel clients like the outdoor natural environment images best.

I was referring to looks, not taste. :)

(BTW, how should I cook a pug to really bring out the sweetness? BBQ sauce, or no?) ;)

Shame on you!!! You bring out the sweetness just by cuddling with them on the couch. They're great lap little lap warmers on cold winter nights.

Go ahead, deny the awesome cuteness of pugs, but you will lose in the end.

Gorgeous images, y'all. Here's something I took for a friend. It was unplanned, but I love how the chair in the back sort of anchors the image.

Since they have bugged out eyes they can be great watch dogs, just stick them in a central location and they can watch the front and back door at the same time.
