| My husband is interviewing at University of Virginia next week and will be visiting Ohio State the first week of march (he already got accepted there). I am going with him on both trips :) We are going to be in Williamsburg, Charlottesville and Richmond in VA. And will be in Columbus Ohio. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of places we should go while we are out and about. Keep in mind that we will have our 1 year old daughter with us. |

the Plantations along the James River, Yorktown Battlefield and "Colonial Williamsburg"...it's wonderful...you will have a good time even with a 1 yr old...we have traveled there alot with our kids in tow...further out and near Fredricksburg is Washington's Boyhood Home Fredricksburg has a great little downtown (antique shops) that are nice to wander around and they have a drive through battle field.
Charlottesville: you have Monticello, Mitchie's Tavern excellent authentic tavern food and well worth the stop...note the times for meals. You have Ash Lawn - President Monroe's home, well worth the visit and just around the corner from Monticello and often overlooked. Just south of you on Hwy 81 is Natural Bridge (a little out of your way probably). here is Lurary Caverns it's a bit north and east Charlottesville.
Have you read the book Follow the River by Alexander Thom? It is based on the area's (Virginia and Ohio) that you are talking about and well worth the read...it's one his very best books!!!
Obviously I love VA!!! We have been all over the state and done alot of exploring there....much to my kids delight (rolling eyes) |

How long are you going to be in Virginia? I'm in Williamsburg. :)
Places to explore or places to photograph? There's lots of history around here. CW (colonial Williamsburg), Yorktown & Jamestown make up the historic triangle and are all within about 20 miles of each other. The mountains are fun. In Richmond I just discovered a cool pedestrian bridge to an island with hiking trails in downtown Richmond. The island is Belle Island, and the larger park is James River Park. Here's the bridge -- it's a suspension bridge that hangs under the freeway. The island is in the middle of the river, with some nice rapids around it. We saw kayakers shooting the rapids there. Just a couple, since it's cold. But a nice trail around the island. There's an abandoned power plant that you can explore a little.
 
I actually like just taking the jamestown scotland ferry across the river and back and shooting some seagulls. There's no charge.
Also, let me know if you're interesting in getting together to going shooting somewhere -- I've got a pretty loose schedule.

natural bridge is extremely expensive, imo. However, there's the virginia safari park out that direction. That was a blast!

How long are you going to be in Virginia? I'm in Williamsburg. :)
We will get in to Newport News at 10PM Wednesday. I think we are spending Thursday around Williamsburg, but we are still trying to figure out plans. We are staying in Charlottesville Thursday night and then on Friday because my husband has his interview on that Friday. I will be looking for stuff to keep me and my daughter entertained during some of the day on Friday while he is doing stuff so  vawendy if you are willing to come up to Charlottesville on Friday some of the day we could shoot together. We leave on Saturday. So a bit of a short trip, but it should be fun. |

| A trip to Maymont is always worth the time when in Richmond. Good spot for kids and photography enthusiasts. :-) |

Really....It was about 25 years ago that I was there and I only remember "driving" or just "seeing" the natural bridge...we were pretty cheep at the time and I know we didn't "pay" for anything...they have probably changed a few things (you think) in the past 25 years...lol

I can really only speak for my neck of the woods, but I think you'll be passing through on your way to OH. I would definitely recommend the VA Safari Park (your daughter will squeal with delight as the animals come to the car for food). Natural Bridge is a good sidetrip, but it is a bit expensive for what you get (exhausted & sweaty from a very long down & then up hill trek) to see the bridge. It's a cool spot - I don't recommend taking the hike to the waterfall at the end of the trail - although the Monocan Indian tribe village is worth a look - the falls are not well kept or photographable.
There are other "side trips" you could make, but it doesn't sound like that's what you're looking for. If you're in the area, I'd definitely recommend the Safari Park. It's great fun and a lot of great camera moments. Feel free to give me a call if you're in the area; I'd be happy to show you around. :-)
