I need/want a shutter release cable to let me do some longer BULB exposures without having to sit holding the camera button down. There seems to be a veritable pantheon of cable and wireless remotes out there for my Canon Rebel T2i/550D.

Is there any reason to get the more expensive Canon remotes, or

This digital timer looks good, but I'm unfamiliar with the brand:
Amazon 1

Alternatively, I can get the most basic Canon cable release for more $ and half the features:
Canon

Anybody have any suggestions or recommendations?

As far as the brand on that first one, its actually made by one chinese company and then sold to a bunch of different companys world wide. So youd probably find it under opteka in germany, etc etc. It would be about the same quality (individual unit not accounted for) as Targus branded products.

THIS - //www.amazon.com/Shutter-Release-Control-RS-60E3-Replacement/dp/B0044BYKI4/ref=sr_1_9?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1297105319&sr=1-9

Appears to be their version of the simplified canon remote. Not sure about the seller though didnt even look, they want 4 bucks for it lol.

EDIT - Speaking of opteka - //www.amazon.com/Opteka-Shutter-Release-Powershot-Replacement/dp/B002PJESBG/ref=pd_cp_e_3

Not familiar with that third party release. It's a simple switch and there are a lot of good ones on the aftermarket. Lots of junk as well. I bought a $10 release for my wife from Cowboystudio and she made mention the other day that it wasn't working. I tried and sure enough, it doesn't.

Looks like that one you mentioned has a lot of positive reviews on Amazon. Probably worth the $15 price and if there is a problem, you are not out much.

That Amazon linked one is rebranded and sold all over, I have one and it works well, very glad I didn't spend more on such a simple device. The lock-switch should work perfectly for what you're requesting. My only gripe with this particular device is that there is no power switch, the instructions just recommend ensuring that nothing on the display is flashing to preserve battery life. That said, it works as an AF button/release (and the lock-switch as well) without any power, so it's only an issue if you want to use the timer features of the remote.

It is rather disappointing that whoever designed this thing managed to miss one of the most basic features of an electronic device, the ability to turn it off. I solve the problem by turning around one of the batteries half a turn so the power won't flow.

All and all, recommended for the price. Perfect for a cheap release button (without any power) and with power, the timed release seems to work great (within reason... the remote has no idea what the camera is doing, so if you set your camera to 10 second exposures, but tell the remote that you want shots taken every 2 seconds, it's obviously not going to be able to do it, as long as the camera is in BULB mode, this remote seems to work fine for time lapse).

The Opteka version of what looks to be the exact same product is almost $35 more expensive!

I picked up quite a nice r.f. release, for not much money. I can't remember the brand, but it works a treat. And no cables!

After posting in this thread, I just went and picked up a 12 foot extension for my release, should at least make it easier to find something to set the remote down on. ;)
