Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED

I currently have a D200 and my sister is getting married in 2 months time. ( I know, I know I should be doing it etc etc ) the question is this I want to have 2 bodys & some back up glass for the day.

I'm looking at either hiring a D700 or buying one. As I haven't used a D700 before I'm concerned about how it will go on the day. I don't want to be wondering where that button is at the all important moment. It will cost about $300 to hire it and the lenses which is quite good I feel.

Really other than that day I don't have a need for 2 cameras or even the power of a D700. Other than the noise of the D200 it suits me fine. Also I know that the D800 is likely to arrive in the next few months so the price will go down on the D700.

Should I upgrade or just hire?

Renting day of or day before doesn't seem like enough time to get familiar with the camera. If you can rent one ahead of time to play with for a weekend, that might be good, and might solidify your decision to purchase or not.

Problem with the D700 is are you using FF glass? Off the top of my head one of your lenses is (the 50) and two of the others are not. A backup is a great idea for this event, as well as any contract work. Just don't discourage yourself from shooting this if you can find a solution.

Now if you mean Hire as in rent, by all means. Rent a D300s if you can.

I'm thinking of a 80-200 2.8 full frame on the D700 & my 17-50 on the D200. Ive back up for both lengths.

anyone have experience on both the D200 & D700. are the controls very dissimilar? certainly the buttons appear to be in the same place.

mgarsteck I'm not sure a downgrade would help :)

As a follow up, I ended up hiring the D700 for the weekend & now have very mixed feelings about it. It is awesome, the ISO is off the chart compared to my D200. In the church it made all the difference in the world. Particularly as it was a no flash church, with damn fluro lights, no decent windows & pissing down rain outside.

The following night I had a bodyscape shoot in studio & used it again. In the studio I couldn't justify the D700. Full frame yes, but that aside I felt that I couldn't use the advantages of the D700.

I don't shoot weddings but have since been asked to do 2 more this year. With the extra glass it cost around $450 for the weekend hire, & I'm not doing a wedding with out a it, but I'm also hoping the D800 will come out soon. I think could justify that to myself (& my wife).
