I have a regular backdrop stand I use for Muslins and per someone's advice for ease of changing I clip the Muslins instead of threading them through the pole.

Now I just bought a paper role (only 53" wide), and I still want to be able to change quickly between that and the Muslins, or even another paper roll when I get one. Is there a good trick for that, or must I thread the roll through the top bar? If I do that, would you suggest just trying to hang the Muslin as an option by clipping it around the paper? (My bar is one of the very wide ones--about 10 feet I think.)

I've also thought about devising a hanger of sorts to hang the paper roll from the bar using a hook on each end, so it can be just lifted off the bar.

Suggestions?

You might try to roll the end of the paper around the bar and then use clamps to keep it from unrolling. But being that it is paper, it is likelier to tear this way. I just read a thread somewhere that someone has a system with chains and pulleys. Sounds rather kinky but it seems to work well.

Since I'm also heading in this direction, I'm interested in finding out solutions as well. Another possibility is to have each backdrop on it's own post, rolled up for use. Replace the stem mount on the stands for a horseshoe holder, and then drop the backdrops into it and roll them down. Store them standing next to each other. I think this would also prevent wrinkles in the cloth.

this is not the one that I have, but it's very similar. A triple crossbar attachment (you could likely fabricate one yourself) makes life very easy when you add two more bars...

We used a cascade approach: cheeks with 3 holes leaning outwards at the top, so we had 3 bars simultaneously available.

Thanks!

After surveying adding a "hanger" to hang the paper roll on my existing bar with the muslin in place, I ended up with a more "unusual" solution, at least for my session yesterday. I laid the roll on the floor and extended it up rather than down, then clipped the edge of the paper on the cross bar using clamps.

The drawback I guess is that it's much easier when doing that to "crease" or bend the paper. Fortunately, my model, who was quite tall, helped me take it down by holding one side to avoid adding any creases.

The potential problem maybe with multiple hangers is that I think for a light stand-type backdrop stand it wouldn't be very "stable" with a fairly heavy roll of paper extending a bit out in front of the muslin backdrop. Unfortunately, my studio is my dining room and so no permanent additions can be made; I can leave things up only until it's time to have people over for dinner!
