Right now I use WHCC to print headshots for clients; however, generally we're talking small quantities (10 or less) at a time. Prints are always fantastic there. However, I'm wondering if that quality of print may be "overkill" for headshots, and I'm wondering if there's a good "cheaper" alternative that might make it easier for them to afford larger runs.
Where do you print your client's headshots? Costs for 25 or 50?

I print my 8x10s (not headshots specifically, though I would if I needed to) at Costco.
Fuji Crystal Archive paper, $1.49/each, glossy or lustre finish, and I believe a 10% discount if you're printing a bunch of copies of the same image (don't know the exact minimum). Printer profiles are available if you're into that sort of thing. |

i use a local lab that provides incredible prints, great prices, and excellent customer service. (i pay $1 for 8x10/12, $2 for 11x14, $.5 for 5x7 with my pro account). no shipping charges and anything ordered by 11pm is ready the next day.
maybe there's a local lab near you... |

Honestly, I find that it's better for both parties if the client prints their own shots.
I typically give clients a CD with 2 high-res edits, permission to reprint and 2 8x10 prints (from MPIX) in a portrait package. Most of my clients are performing artists, and want bulk 8x10s. It's not economical for them to buy 8x10s from me, and not worth it for me to hassle with a bunch of low-margin 8x10 prints.
Now, if your business model is different and you are only providing a few prints a la carte, it makes more sense to sell prints.

Thanks. No costco near here; the local pro printers I've tried so far are not cheap, and not even good (especially compared to WHCC). I did find a couple of places on the web that look cheaper for quantity orders. For low quantity, WHCC seems still to be the place to go, especially because there's no shipping charge, so very high quality prints at $2.20 per 8x10.

In quantities of 100, these can get it down to $1 per print. Plus the latter has an interesting paper option where the back can be printed.
I think I'll switch over to letting them print their own...I wasn't making money on the prints anyway, just a service to make sure they got the best prints. |

Smart. If you aren't making money on it, then it's probably not worth it! Although you might want to include a couple of good quality prints just so they can see what a nice print will look like. |
