I sure missed the Redrock GTG this year, so I'm ready to start planning and see if we can get some great deals, keep the costs down and get some interesting weather.

If we go before March 31st, we can get off-season rates, which means rooms as low as $49 (edited)/night. It's also the time for interesting weather, making for great photos, without being terribly cold. Highs are in the 60's and low's are in the 30's.

Tentatively the last weekend of March: March 24-29, 2011

Places to shoot/outings:
Canyonlands National Park- 45 miles northwest (Island in the Sky) or 68 miles southwest (Needles District) and Newsletter: Ancient Kiva, Newspaper Rock (petroglyphs)

Arches National Park Arches National Park - 4 miles north: and newletter Newsletter Popular arches are: Delicate Arch (Sunset shot w/ 2 mi. hike), Mesa Arch (Sunrise shot w/ 0.5 mi hike)
Possible AM shots are: Moab Fault, The Three Gossips, Sheep Rock, The Great Wall, Turrett Arch, The Spectacles, Double Arch, Cache Valley, Wolfe Ranch, Landscape Arch, Double O Arch
Possible PM shots are: Park Avenue, Courthouse Towers, Petrified Dunes, Balanced Rocks, The Garden of Eden, North and South Windows, Delicate Arch, Fiery Furnace, Skyline Arch, Fins in Devil's Garden, Tower Arch

Dead Horse Point State Park - 33 miles north

Slot Canyons

Wildlife and lakes/ponds on Blue Mountain (evening light)

Petroglyphs

Indian ruins, cliff dwellings

Slickrock area and trails

General scenery and Colorado River,

Moab Grill

Moab Paper Mill

Let me know if you are interested in attending and how committed you are. Anything else nearby that interests you?

It will depend on WHEN, but I would love to go. I am currently childless, that frees up a lot more time.

Hey, Barbara... I childless to. lol!!!

I'm very interested in a Red Rock GTG to. Keep me posted about it and I will try and work out my schedule to meet yours. Made a first trip to ArchesNP with good camera equipment last Spring. Zillions of photo ops there and I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Never photographed nearby Canyonlands and have always wanted to. Gives me a chance to use my National Parks pass more.

Talk is heating up to make the San Rafael Swell a national monument so wanna go there before all the crowds show up. ;)

count me in , depending on dates!

I'm thinking the 24th of March through the 29th, 2011. It's the last weekend of March with a few days on either side of the weekend.

The Inca Inn answered back. The prices run $49-72/night depending on what you get. Basic 1 King or 2 doubles is $49 Sun - Thurs and $59 Fri-Sat, but we can get it for $49 all nights if a deposit is made by Jan. For slightly more on the weekend you can get a room with a fridge and microwave.

What do you think?

hmm, that is Spring Break in Arizona, you may find that it gets really expensive fairly quickly at that time

The quote is in on the motel, so that's stable. It's also to get the cabins for about the same amount at the same time, but they don't have private bathrooms for that price. We've gotten caught in the higher prices by waiting even until January. Now is the time to make reservations at the less expensive prices.

Maybe they have, 'cause it was advertised at low season for $39 instead of $49. Still that's awesome for Moab.

Yup and we stayed at the Inca before and it was simple but clean for a great price in a great location.

Edit: BTW those dates look good for me at this point but I can't commit quite yet.

Bummer, this is the week after my spring break. Depending upon homework load/vehicle/money situation at that time, I may be interested in coming for part of it, Friday-Monday, arriving mid afternoon and leaving in the evening. Because there's no way for me to commit at this time, I'd just plan on trying to camp or something, but I'll keep my eyes open for this.

I'm taking a short trip south this weekend to check out some side trips we may want to pursue. I'll let you know if I find anything interesting.

Hmm, sounds interesting and the weather sounds great, too!
Thinking....thinking...cannot commit just yet, though.

Becky - any new news on this GTG? I'm still interested and should be back in time.

Ohhhhhh, shoooooot.

I've got a conference for work the same time that I have to attend.

Back to the drawing board for dates.

Any thoughts?

Enjoy the bridges I helped build, and we just finished just last week over the north end of town over the Colorado river.

My vote would be for later rather than sooner, maybe 1st week of April?

I'm better if I push it way back. The weekend of May 12 -17 works really well (comparitively speaking).

I've been checking prices and they really go up. I can't get in touch the place we've used before since they are closed in January, but they may be possible.

I've been lookinging into home rentals with the idea of sharing a home - cheaper and nicer than a motel. I'll share more on that later.

How does May 12 - 17 work for you all?
01/04/2011 12:53:04 AM · #21
I might be able to do May 12-17 but can't commit with a definate as yet.
01/04/2011 03:03:58 AM · #22
That would be better for me since school will have just ended for the year, and as such, I'd have more free time and could probably just request it off from work. It may depend upon if I go to the Fruita Fat Tire festival at the end of April or not, though.

Without more interest, it doesn't make sense to continue with the plans. So, it's a NO-GO.

If any of you are in the area and want to arrange a small GTG, send me a PM. I make it that way a few times a year.

hummm too bad. Last group was a lot of fun. Yes I'm still around, been living here in Utah for about three years now. I just got more involved in commercial photography and especially video. It's been good to me, lots of traveling for photo work. Don

Something I've learned from planning a few GTGs... it usually works best if the organizer just picks a date and goes from there. Seems like it's almost impossible to get people to come to a consensus on a date as a group. Of course some dates will ultimately work better than others, but by specifying a date people can start setting it aside and making plans. Those who can make it will make it... those who can't might be able to do it the next year.

Bummer to see this GTG fall apart. I'd love to attend one sometime (I don't live anywhere near this area, but I've been there before and I'd love to go back). And it was fun to see all the photos that resulted -- awesome stuff in the past!
