I like the shots, but I miss the... improvements that even basic editing brings.
That said, it's a good reminder that you need to concentrate on the shot, and not only the editing packages you have on your computer.

I haven't looked at under yet. Took a peek at the thread and saw some great scores.
I'm finding it difficult to vote in them, though. Very difficult.

I'm sure the tendency is to think how flat the colors look and how much better a modest crop could improve some of them. It is indeed hard to keep that in mind and avoid comparing to normal challenges.

I'm gonna play the grinch here and say, "But... but... that's what we're SUPPOSED to be doing!"

I don't see the point in minimal editing at all if we're just gonna give higher scores to make allowance for the restrictions of the ruleset. No, for me the interesting thing is to ferret out the ones that are so well done they have no NEED of further editing, and reward them accordingly.

In other words, I'm just as much of a stickler for leveling up the horizon (or whatever criterion) in these challenges as in any other I vote on.

I entered the under challenge, and while I am scoring well in it, I found it very frustrating that I couldnt do more do my shot. I made a minimal, and an advanced copy of my shot and my advanced version is infinitely better. Sigh.

ETA: I would like to see many of the participants include an advanced copy of their shot in their outtakes.

Good point, but even those would still be likely to benefit from a minor tweak or two. I think my entry is pretty good and stands well on it's own, but after I submitted it, I cropped a little and bumped up the saturation and it turned into a wow shot, imo. If my granddaughter had not been along and doing the "potty waddle", I might have tried it a few more ways and perhaps gotten better from it.

Oh, I don't think there is much excuse for a tilted horizon in this. I won't excuse that, but it's difficult to get the wow colors and contrast under these rules, and that is what I am being somewhat forgiving of. You can only crank the colors up so much in-camera. There do seem to be a handful of entries that have achieved wow colors however.

Setting my camera to Vivid+ gives wild colors and great sharpness. Newer Nikons let you set a Vivid+ starting point and then boost the contrast, saturation, and sharpness even more from there.

I completely agree with Bear_Music. The vote we put on the image shouldn't be rules dependant. As far as I'm concerned, if the same challenge is submitted to the four competitins (identical in title, but different in editing rules) and if it's edited in minimal for each... it should get roughly the same score four times.
Hence my voting's down a lot lower than normal. I'll revisit my votes later on in the week. Might have changed my mind somewhat by then.
