Some how I ended up having a discussion on the train with a strange about what medium (Digital vs Film) is better for long exposures (say more then 30 sec). I kinda thought that Digital would be better as it is the new technology, however I am not longer certain.
With a Digital camera we appear to have some sort of photodiode leakage currents which creates noise (see here) and we appear to got more unnatural star bust effects around light sources.
This does not appear to happen with film as long as you take into account reciprocity (see here) and you get a more natural looking shot. Which to me means that using film will give you better fine detail in the shot.
Anyway I am going to go out and put it to the test, but I would like to know what you think and if you have noticed a difference between the two mediums with long exposure. |

| Film , from what I know is frame for frame less noisy. Digital frames are much easier to compile into a single image. So from what I understand sequential short exposures taken digitally and then layered into a single frame create the most pleasing image. |

So  BrennanOB you mean to say instead of taking say one 30 second exposure you could take 6 shots at 5seconds then combine them in photoshop? What layering technique would you use? |

I was thinking longer than 30 seconds, more like 5 minutes, the sort of work for star trails and the like. At thirty seconds there really isn't much noise unless the ISO is over 800. Star trail work is usually done between 10 seconds and five minuets.
you can combine images in layers or any one of specialty software packages.
Nice explanation on this lovely combination of 5 min exposures
