I seriously don't get it.

A 1? Isn't that special. I know that I don't have the best of the batch, but really? The worst score you can give? What score do you give to photos that are worse than mine? Jerk.

For what is essentially an extended free study with 500+ entries I am happy with this score so far.

I've gotten a couple one's recently too. Went from a 6.19 to a 5.8 in the space of a few votes.

Went to bed with a 5.0, with 8 scores of 5 in a row.
But ever since it has been skyrocketing upwards. I could see the score stopping where it is right now, but it would be nice if it didn't ;-)

Ouchies...:-(
This was up to a 5.75 at one point. The last 20 votes must have all been 5 or lower.
A shame too, I really wanted this shot to break my top 5 because I like it so much.

Could be my last challenge for awhile as well. Tired of people slamming decent photos for strategic purposes. I'm not even talking about my own submissions. I'm talking about voting patterns I see on images submitted by consistent ribbon winners. For instance...and no names mentioned, but I saw a photo in a recent challenge that was very under rated in my opinion. This photo had one comment which was very enthusiastic about the photo in question. They happened to be the only comment left on that photo and when I looked at the "average commenter" score it was a 2!

This kind of thing happens all the time, and quite frankly it's sickening. If you like a photo than score it FAIRLY. It you don't care for it then score it accordingly as well, but don't give a 1 or 2 to a photo that you know at the very least is worth a 5 or a 4.

I don't want to here the same lame reasoning such as "Oh, it's a matter of taste..some people like certain things and others don't etc." That happens and that's normal. I'm talking about blatant and purposeful hateful voting for whatever reasons a person can come up with. We all know there have always been trolls (call them what you will) and there always will be. I'm talking about the type of activity that is becoming the norm around here lately. I read a lot of comments on here so I know others are sensing it as well. DPL? I don't know....perhaps. Still no excuse no matter the reasoning. Perhaps DPL teams SHOULDN'T know which entries are their team members. I know they can't vote on each others by design, but that in itself presents a problem. If they didn't know which photos were their teams members they would be more apt to vote fairly because they had no way of knowing if they were hurting their own team member by voting low. It would keep the voter honest. Also, if by chance they really like the photo and score it high then the submitter of the entry gets a score they deserve and by proxy they also help their team unknowingly. After all ...it's like a sport right? Anyway, I know this is the scoring thread so back to it. I've just wanted to add my .02 for what it's worth.

For the record: I'm not a DPL team, and I am NOT trying to say they are the reason behind some very low voting lately. Who knows if it has an effect. I don't for sure. I was just giving my thoughts on how it could be prevented by changing up the way it's done in the voting.

Second, I'm still not talking about my own images. I have had color management/calibration issues since I reinstalled my OS a couple of months and I may have gotten that finally worked out in the last couple of days. Also, my subject matter hasn't been that great due to lack of time to find something more interesting. I know where I stand and will continue to work on making something worth looking at. That's on me. I know my weakness right now and normally fully expect to fall somewhere in the middle of the pack give or take. Yes, I think my own images even if they have been weaker have additionally suffered from low voters, but personally even if they scored a full point higher on most of them lately it still wouldn't matter. I get that. It used to be that the occasional troll votes wouldn't really affect your overall score, and that makes sense and is true. That's changing now. There is more of it now...a lot more of it and it IS hurting the placement of a lot of photos that are much better than mine.

Anyway, I sure some will agree and some will say Dave, just take your toys and go home, but that's the way I'm seeing things right now.

Rant over.

I was going to jump in and commiserate because I have THAT image that I swear is the best of the bunch. It's at 6.2 and I'm actually ticked because I have no idea what you have to shoot to get a high 6 or low seven score if this one doesn't qualify.

Or, so the thinking goes.

And Then I get a comment that tells me its one of the most beautiful images in the world they've ever seen. Similar comments followed.

So, the hell with the rest of you ninnies. That just makes it all worthwhile and reminds me why I come to post my stuff here. Because I get validation, or someone points something out I really hadn't considered.

I'm humbled (because lord knows (and now you do) that I'm arrogant) and then I learn something.

And when compared against the balance of images, there are truly many fine images in this bunch (not as good as mine :), but good enough that I understand the differences in preferences).

So what's the average you've voted on recent challenges?

Now, thinking off the top of my head for a second, how about the scrubber giving the rest of your team your average vote cast on the challenge? If you vote low your team mates get your average vote? (of course, that would open up the score high on poor shots and low on possible ribbon shots thing).

Scaling, that's the answer. If someone votes on a scale of 1-5 for example, then at rollover that's translated into a 1-10 scale. The votes could be scaled not just on the scale used (because a single 1 vote and a single 10 vote would defeat that) but scaled so that the median was 5.5. You lose transparency but the voters relative ranking is preserved.

Nuzzer, I vote fairly and in 95 percent of the challenges I vote on every single entry. I don't just pick and choose the best ones just to pad my voting average and make myself look good. I vote fairly.

So, if you're implying by your question that I'm calling the kettle black...don't. I do give out the occasional 1, 2 or 3, but that's NOT the norm. For an image to get that score from me it has to really really suck, be extremely in bad taste (and no I'm not talking about nudity etc.)or be an image that is pretty bad in all areas and on top of it DNMC. So in general my low vote is a 4 for an image that obviously had effort, but is still not there yet in focus, quality of subject matter etc. 5 of course it average. So I can tell you with 100 percent honestly that I give out TONS of 7's 8's 9's and I'm willing to bet an over average amount of 10's to submission here.

My own voting average is probably around where most averages would and should be if everyone voted on every single photo in a consistent and honest matter. If I only voted to fulfill my 20 percent minimum and only scored images I liked with higher votes my average would be in the 6's 7's or better. Since I vote on all photos that average gets pulled more to the center as it should.

My average on recent challenges has actually gone up. In general my voting average swings normally between a 5.3 to 5.8

I was just wondering, did you vote on the recent user portrait challenge for example? If so, what were your voting stats? Just asking, not accusations.

The portrait challenge that is currently going on? No, I have not voted on that challenge yet. I looked through them sometime after rollover, but have not gotten the chance to vote yet. Based on what I remember seeing it will be a high scoring challenge because there were some great entries.

Isn't there somewhere you can go to see your voting stats in a past challenge? I've tried under archives and history etc. but can't find that out. Is that stat hidden to us after the challenge is over?

I really thought it was better than a 4. However, I do have a fav. I am happy with that.

I propose we publish the IP address and username of anyone who gives more than 4 consecutive 1's, automatically question them to leave a comment (NOT anonymous) justifying the score, and if they don't, fire them! And if they do, well, they would think twice before randomly low-voting an image;-)

Whadya say? Anyone? :-)

Slooooowly slowly creeping up and up... I'm okay with that as long as the trend continues. :P Still a lot of votes to go.

Well, the streak is over -- it was interesting watching it go up .1 every ten votes or so... got as high as 5.7 or so before the dive, but last night and today took their toll, and I guess I'm well on the other side of the curve now...

ETA - Wow, another 3 pages of posts to this thread, too -- I see I'm not the only one taking a bit of a beating. I can't complain much -- I've never really understood what works well here (I thought this entry was "6" territory at least), and haven't entered much, but it's fun to throw something in from time to time and see what floats.

If you're referring to the Rejected Movie Poster images, I think the guy was giving low scores for the posters that looked awesome because he thought they were DNMC because they wouldn't be rejected. If not, never mind. =)
