My heart is broken....my wallet crushed...I was out taking pictures while golfing, put the camera bag in the car and when I got home to download the pictures I pulled out the camera only to find that the Preview window is now cracked...badly! Is there any way to fix this? I've had the 50D for less than 3 weeks. I repeat...LESS THAN 3 Weeks and it's already broken!!!

I don't know about Canon, but I replaced one in a D200 with one from a smashed D200 that still had an intact LCD. I'm not a whiz with electronics, but I didn't have to be, I just had to be careful and take my time. It was just screws and ribbon connectors. See if you can find a broken 50d cheap and start taking it apart and documenting as you go.

Edit to add, after reading other posts I realized I assumed for some reason that you bought it used, I thought the 50D had been superseded with something else. So in that regard, I agree with the the others who said send it back to Canon.

If it is only 3 weeks old it is under warranty. Send it back to get the screen replaced? Or did it get hit with a golf club or something? It should not crack with normal use (ie putting the camera bag in your car strikes me as normal use.)

Yeah, I'd send it back to Canon.

Okay that is what I will have to do. No it wasn't it with a golf club or anything. I have no clue when or how it happened. I only used it for the first 9 holes before putting it in my car. And kept it in the bag after the 7th hole. I'll have to send it back to Canon after I get back from my trip...which means I'm going to be without it a for a while which sucks.

The screen on the back? Same thing happened to my husband, he also has a 50D and put it into a bag together with a lot of stuff, while traveling. Something hard must have hit the screen, it was cracked badly and didn't work at all anymore. Clearly his fault; we sent it in for repair and got away with the base fee for repairs, around 100$ (Japan). His 50D wasn't under warranty any more.
Good luck, hope your warranty helps for a free repair! However to be without your camera for a while must hurt.

Yeah, spend the $ to have an authorized service center repair it, if you have one near you. I'm glad it wasn't stolen, which is where I thought the story was going at first. Cheers,

The question is, does the screen still function? If the actual LCD isn't broken, just the window covering it, that glass can be replaced very cheaply In fact, it is a user-replaceable part. I haven't had to do it but I know it is possible.

Yep...checked. The LCD stil works, just the window covering it. So if Canon doesn't repair it at least I know it will be cheap.

Get one of those protective shields and mount it. Order a new glass screen. Replace the cracked screen yourself when the new one comes, not hard to do.

The service from Canon in Irvine was great. When I sent my camera in for calibration under warranty, they replaced the screen because it had a few scratches on it, did the calibration, and didn't charge anything. :-)

I cracked the window on my 10D. You can get a replacement window and it's pretty easy to replace it.

You also might want to purchase some armor with //www.cameraarmor.com/. I bought it for my 20D and it gives me some piece of mind.
