Okay so quite awhile ago I purchased a template from photobiz and secured my domain name through them as well. The very unimaginative ErinKirstenPhoto.com and ErinKirstenPhotography.com I thought I'd have my site up and running in no time and paid for hosting, blah blah blah. Fast forward - I could never figure out the template and when I had a web designer look at it she said it'd be better to just build from scratch as the template was very restrictive and I would have trouble updating it. Well, in the mean time my domain name expired and I didn't want to pay the high cost through the company because they said they technically own the name so I let it expire. Ooops - big mistake. That was a few months ago, somebody else picked up my domain names, it's in the redemption stage.
So my appeal is for this. I'd love some creative ways to secure a new domain name and/or do I just wait out for my old one's to be available again (ekphoto and ekphotography are both taken)? And does anyone know a registration/fee service where you actually own your domain, I found out although I was paying for it (I thought), I was paying for hosting and the hosting company technically owned my name. |

Thank you - I just sent them a note to see how I could get my old domains back. They are expired, I am sure some company just bought them thinking I'd pay to get them back. Perhaps I'll go with erinkirstenphoto.net and just wait it out till the .com becomes available again.
Buyer beware, make sure you own your domain and that your hosting company doesn't own it. They charge whatever they want and make you continue to use their services while holding your domains hostage. |

"Redemption" does not mean that somebody else owns or registered the name. Redemption is a period of dormancy for a domain name during which the domain registries -- the companies that actually control registration of domain names, not resellers like Photobiz -- impose a hefty fee in order for you to get your name back. Redemption occurs after your name expires, and has been expired for forty days.
In most cases, especially if the domain name is nondescript, you can wait out the redemption period and simply re-register your name once it is released. The redemption period is about thirty days. After that, there is a holding period of about seven days before the name is released, and can be registered as though it were new.
Your name expired on January 12. Forty days after that is February 21, and 37 days after that is March 30. So you should be able to simply re-register your domain names on or about March 28 to March 30 with a reputable and cheap domain name provider using your own information.
Use a decent reseller. Network Solutions is okay but wouldn't be my first choice. I'd prefer a privately owned small reseller you trust. If you know of no such company, go with NetSol.

I've always had great luck and support from www.hosteazy.com. They registered my name and have helped me when I'm tried doing things on my own and messed it up. If I remember correctly they will even do the designing for you if you want (I'm sure for extra money of course), which is probably what I should do since mine is VERY out dated and lame. ;)

Oh Thank you all so much!! You know I enjoy DPC for the photographic challenge and fun that offers. However, I really appreciate that there is always someone on here that offers concise and helpful information when asked.
