Ha, interesting about the lens info.
I'll explain my comment about stopping motion-
Think of how you capture water drops, or hummingbird wings; it's the same way. Those are all shot with relatively (1/250 or below) low shutter speeds. What freezes the motion is the duration of the flash burst. The only thing is you need to underexpose your ambient in order to do this. That also means you'll need a ton of light, because you'll essentially have to put out more light than your ambient scene is providing.
Case in point- photos like this

ETA: There's another explanation of the concept here too

Sooo, I don't really shoot sports, but I was driving past a game this evening and took a few shots..

Any comments are most welcome - these were the most interesting two.. :)

In the end, I really like how the 400mm flattens out the scene and you get a nicely compressed view.

I shot for my nephew's football game today.... it was my first time doing such a high activity sport....

I think I did pretty good for it being a first time.... but I want to do better next time.....

This is the images and the sun was my enemy.

Obviously I cant change game time.... so what can I do??? I thought about using a polarizer would that help?

Any advice would be wonderful!

This is not a paying gig... this is just a happy aunt supporting and loving her family.... but I am also trying to learn from it.....

I would suggest you go back and read this thread and look at how you shot your game. And the settings you used. You can shoot AV mode with exposure comensation to help with back lighting. Or go full manual. There is no need to shoot at F8 and I'd never shoot football at less than 1/500 and in daylight I like to get 1/2000 or faster. Bump your ISO up to get the needed shutter speed. Noise can be worked on in post processing motion blur can't. In sports 99% of the time you want to stop the action not show blur.

This has been a really great thread, Matt. Thanks a million for the time you've put into it and for the great advice.

You answered a big mystery for me when I shot hockey games with a burst of several shots - I thought something was wrong with my camera when I kept noticing the color variations from one shot in the burst to the next.

I am assuming you do not use the ATG technique for football?

Do you ever use a flash on evening football games? I wouldn't think the flash would be strong enough for a 300mm lens shot. But if so, I assume this flash would be on camera?

Light cycles will drive a sports photographer nuts.....That is why I love to strobe in places that allow it.

I use ATG with everything that is practical. I just uploaded some Football photos from the Jamboree I shot and one from the first game of the season. Nearly all shot kneeling or sitting. Just makes things bigger.

You wouldn't get these shot standing up

I used to use flash to fill on friday night football games. now I just crank the ISO and shoot wide open and take what I can get. The flash will cover 300MM and many people use it. I just prefer not too anymore. Personal preference really.

Thank you for this thread just awesome!!! I heard that Canon rocks at shooting sports as far as the focusing goes and it is much easier for the set ups is this true at all? Canon vs Nikon
Or does the make of the camera not matter in these things??

I am sooo interested as my nephew starts his first yr in football

Does equipment matter? Yes, does Brand matter? Not to me, I've shot 3 brands professionally, I'm currently using Nikon. You have to use that works for you. The best camera for the job, is the one in your hands. They can ALL make great images in the right hands, you just have to make sure those hands belong to you.

Actually I have, but only locally spreading the love to some local kids who dream to make a fortune with a camera.
